# Sandvik Church

**Sandvik Church** (Norwegian: *Sandvikskirken*) is a [parish church](/source/Parish_church) of the [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) in [Bergen Municipality](/source/Bergen_Municipality) in [Vestland](/source/Vestland) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). It is located in the [Sandviken](/source/Sandviken,_Norway) neighborhood in the city of [Bergen](/source/Bergen_(city)). It is the church for the Sandviken [parish](/source/Parish), which is part of the [Bergen domprosti](/source/Bergen_domprosti) (arch-[deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Bjørgvin](/source/Diocese_of_Bj%C3%B8rgvin). The brown, stone church was built in a [long church](/source/Long_church) design in 1881 using plans drawn up by the [architects](/source/Architect) Ernst Norgrenn and [Schak Bull](/source/Schak_Bull). The church seats about 500 people.[1][2]

## History

In 1874, the Sandviken neighborhood was separated from the [Korskirken](/source/Holy_Cross_Church,_Bergen) parish to become its own parish. In 1876, the area became a part of the city of [Bergen](/source/Bergen_(city)). Since the new parish had no church, a limited architectural competition was held between [Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe](/source/Conrad_Fredrik_von_der_Lippe), [Giovanni Müller](/source/Giovanni_M%C3%BCller), and [Ernst Norgrenn](/source/Ernst_Norgrenn) to determine who would design the new church. Ernst Norgrenn won and was hired to design the church; however, he died in 1880, before the church was completed. His assistant, [Schak Bull](/source/Schak_Bull), completed the project. The large stone church was designed in a [Neo-Gothic](/source/Neo-Gothic) style. The church was [consecrated](/source/Consecrate) on 30 December 1881. Initially, the church had a [sacristy](/source/Sacristy) on the [chancel](/source/Chancel)'s north and south sides. In 1903, the southern sacristy was enlarged to be similar to the one on the north side. In 1917–1918, both sacristies were expanded according to plans by the architect Caspar Hassel.[3][4]
