**Sandside** is a [hamlet](/source/Hamlet_(place)) near [Storth](/source/Storth) in [Beetham](/source/Beetham) parish, [Westmorland and Furness](/source/Westmorland_and_Furness), [Cumbria](/source/Cumbria), England. [1] Historically in [Westmorland](/source/Westmorland), it lies on the south shore of the estuary of the [River Kent](/source/River_Kent), between [Arnside](/source/Arnside) and [Milnthorpe](/source/Milnthorpe). There is one pub, The Ship Inn, (closed December 2020) which is believed to date from 1671,[2] one restaurant, The Kingfisher, which closed in September 2021 [3] and several commercial businesses.

Sandside lies within the [Arnside and Silverdale](/source/Arnside_and_Silverdale) [Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty](/source/Area_of_Outstanding_Natural_Beauty). A "Geotrail" leaflet has been published to guide visitors around the geology of the area.[4] Sandside quarry has operated since at least 1901,[5] and is now operated by [Lafarge Tarmac](/source/Lafarge_Tarmac), producing [aggregate](/source/Construction_aggregate) and [asphalt](/source/Asphalt_concrete).[6]

[Sandside railway station](/source/Sandside_railway_station), on the [Hincaster Branch](/source/Hincaster_Branch) of the [Furness Railway](/source/Furness_Railway), was built in 1876 by Lancaster architects [Paley and Austin](/source/List_of_non-ecclesiastical_works_by_Paley_and_Austin). The line closed to passengers in 1942 and the station has been demolished.

Until the building of the [Arnside viaduct](/source/Arnside_viaduct) in 1857, Milnthorpe (upstream of Sandside) was a substantial port, handling cargoes including [coal](/source/Coal) and [guano](/source/Guano). Its customs house was at Sandside, still existing as Crown Cottage with a datestone of 1728. Builders' merchants and other commercial operations occupy sites along the riverside which were previously used by the merchants of the port.[7]
