==History==
Sanananda was occupied by the [Imperial Japanese Army](/source/Imperial_Japanese_Army) in 1942 during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) and became a heavily fortified defensive area. It was liberated by the [Australian Army](/source/Australian_Army) and [US Army](/source/US_Army) on 18 January 1943 during the [Battle of Buna-Gona](/source/Battle_of_Buna-Gona).
