Street in Bangkok, Thailand

Sanam Chai road outside of the [Grand Palace](/source/Grand_Palace).

**Sanam Chai Road** ([Thai](/source/Thai_language): ถนนสนามไชย, [RTGS](/source/Royal_Thai_General_System_of_Transcription): **Thanon Sanam Chai**, pronounced [\[tʰā.nǒn sā.nǎːm t͡ɕʰāj\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai)) is a historic street in [Bangkok](/source/Bangkok)'s [Phra Nakhon District](/source/Phra_Nakhon_District). It continues from [Ratchadamnoen Nai Road](/source/Ratchadamnoen_Nai_Road) at the northeastern corner of the [Grand Palace](/source/Grand_Palace), and runs south to meet [Rachini](/source/Rachini_Road) and [Maharat roads](/source/Maha_Rat_Road) near the mouth of the old city moat, a short distance of 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi). The Grand Palace, [Wat Pho](/source/Wat_Pho), [Museum Siam](/source/Museum_Siam), and [Phra Ratchawang Police Station](/source/Phra_Ratchawang_Police_Station) are located on the west side of the road, while on the east side are the [Ministry of Defence headquarters](/source/Ministry_of_Defence_headquarters_(Thailand)), [Saranrom Palace](/source/Saranrom_Palace), [Saranrom Park](/source/Saranrom_Park), the [Territorial Defense Command headquarters](/source/Territorial_Defense_Command_headquarters) and [Wat Rajabopit School](/source/Wat_Rajabopit_School). The [Sanam Chai Station](/source/Sanam_Chai_Station) of the underground [MRT](/source/MRT_(Bangkok))'s [Blue Line](/source/MRT_Blue_Line) is located beneath the road's final stretch.

The road is named after Sanam Chai ("field of prosperity"), a field formerly located in front of Saranrom Palace and used for military exercises. The field, together with [Sanam Luang](/source/Sanam_Luang), was named by King [Mongkut](/source/Mongkut) (Rama IV) in 1855, in order to follow the naming previously used in [Ayutthaya](/source/Ayutthaya_Kingdom). Sanam Chai is overlooked by the Grand Palace's [Sutthaisawan Prasat](/source/Sutthaisawan_Prasat) Hall, which is used by the king for public appearances.[1]

In terms of [politics](/source/Thai_politics), Sanam Chai Road during the 1960s and 1970s was often used as a keynote address for [various political parties](/source/List_of_political_parties_in_Thailand) in [each election](/source/Elections_in_Thailand). Most often start the campaign at Sanam Luang and ends at Sanam Chai.[2]
