'''San Region''' is an administrative [region](/source/Regions_of_Mali) in southern [Mali](/source/Mali). It was created from parts of the former [Ségou Region](/source/S%C3%A9gou_Region) and has its capital in the town of [San](/source/San%2C_Mali). The region lies between the lowland area of the [Bani River](/source/Bani_River), the Ségou Region and the border with [Burkina Faso](/source/Burkina_Faso).

== Geography ==
San Region is located in south-central Mali, east of the city of [Ségou](/source/S%C3%A9gou) and south of the [Niger Bend](/source/Niger_Bend). It covers an area of 14,200 km².<ref name=":0">{{cite web |url=https://www.citypopulation.de/en/mali/cities/ |title=Mali: Regions, Cities & Urban Localities - Population Statistics, Maps, Charts, Weather and Web Information |website=Citypopulation.de |access-date=8 May 2026}}</ref> The area lies mainly in the [Sudan](/source/Sudanian_savanna)–[Sahelian](/source/Sahel) transition zone. The landscape is characterised by [savanna](/source/savanna)s, agricultural plains and bodies of water. The area around San is hydrologically connected with the basin of the [Bani River](/source/Bani_River), an important tributary of the [Niger River](/source/Niger_River). Rainfall is concentrated in the rainy season and largely determines agricultural yields.

== History ==
The area of present-day San Region long belonged to Ségou Region after Mali’s independence. The creation of a separate San Region had already been envisaged by the administrative reform of 2012, but was initially not fully implemented. Law No. 2023-006 of 13 March 2023 on the creation of new administrative regions in the Republic of Mali eventually confirmed the new territorial division and established San as one of the country’s regions. The former territory of [San Cercle](/source/San_Cercle) partly corresponds to the new region.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://matd.gouv.ml/creation-circonscriptions-administrative-en-republique-mali |title=Loi n°2023-006 portant création des circonscriptions administratives en République du Mali |publisher=Ministère de l'Administration Territoriale et de la Décentralisation |language=fr |access-date=8 May 2026}}</ref>

== Administrative divisions ==
The region is divided into seven ''cercles''.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://data.humdata.org/dataset/cod-ab-mli |title=Mali - Subnational Administrative Boundaries |website=The Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX) - OCHA Global Subnational Administrative Boundaries |publisher=UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs - Field Information Services Section (FISS), Geneva, Switzerland |date=2 April 2026 |format=XLSX; GeoJSON; Shape; GDB |language=en |access-date=8 May 2026}}</ref> According to the [OCHA](/source/United_Nations_Office_for_the_Coordination_of_Humanitarian_Affairs), it comprises 17 arrondissements, 42 communes and 832 villages.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.unocha.org/publications/map/mali/carte-de-reference-region-de-san-nouveau-decoupage-administratif-du-mali-aout-2025 |title=Carte de Référence - Région de San - Nouveau Découpage administratif du Mali |publisher=United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs |date=14 January 2026 |format=Map |language=fr |access-date=8 May 2026}}</ref>

== Economy ==
As in most parts of Mali, the economy of San Region is shaped by [agriculture](/source/agriculture), and the southern and central parts of the country are among Mali’s more important agricultural production areas. The main crops include [millet](/source/millet), [sorghum](/source/sorghum), [maize](/source/maize), [cotton](/source/cotton) and [peanuts](/source/Peanut). The region also benefits from its location on important transport routes between [Bamako](/source/Bamako), [Ségou](/source/S%C3%A9gou), [Mopti](/source/Mopti) and eastern Mali, as well as the neighbouring country of Burkina Faso.
