# San Gregorio, Chile

**San Gregorio** is a [commune](/source/Communes_of_Chile) in the far south of Chile. It is part of [Magallanes Region](/source/Magallanes_Region) and [Province](/source/Magallanes_Province), and is administered by the municipality of the same name located in [Punta Delgada](/source/Punta_Delgada,_Chile), the principal town in the commune (the coordinates are those of Punta Delgada).

The comuna is on the north shore of the [Strait of Magellan](/source/Strait_of_Magellan); between the Strait, to the south, and the border with [Argentina](/source/Argentina), to the north. At the [Primera Angostura](/source/Primera_Angostura), south of the town of Punta Delgada, there is a [ferry](/source/Ferry) crossing to [Primavera](/source/Primavera,_Chile) commune on [Tierra del Fuego Island](/source/Isla_Grande_de_Tierra_del_Fuego). The good wind resource attracted a [wind power](/source/Wind_power_in_Chile) project, scheduled for 2025.[3]

## Features

In the settlement of Estancia San Gregorio ([52.566944°S 70.07°W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-52.566944_-70.07)), some 40 km (25 mi) southwest of Punta Delgada, there is an [estancia](/source/Estancia), and several imposing buildings dating from 1882.

Nearby are wrecks of two 19th-century [cargo ships](/source/Cargo_ship).[4] [*Ambassador*](/source/Ambassador_(clipper)) was a sailing tea [clipper](/source/Clipper), built in [London](/source/London) in 1869 and beached at San Gregorio in 1896.[5] *Amadeo* was a [steamship](/source/Steamship), built in [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool) in 1884 and beached at San Gregorio in 1932.[6]

According to the 2002 [census](/source/Census) of the [National Statistics Institute](/source/National_Statistics_Institute_(Chile)), San Gregorio spans an area of 6,883.7 km2 (2,658 sq mi) and has 1,158 inhabitants (886 men and 272 women), making the commune an entirely [rural area](/source/Rural_area). The population fell by 29.5% (485 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.[7]

The population is mostly descended from [Croatian](/source/Croats), [Spanish](/source/Spanish_people) and other [Europeans](/source/Europe).[8]

## Administration

As a comuna, San Gregorio is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/Administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council), headed by an [alcalde](/source/Alcalde) who is directly elected every four years. The 2012–2016 alcalde is Edgar Cárcamo Alderete.[9][10]

Within the [electoral divisions of Chile](/source/Electoral_divisions_of_Chile), San Gregorio is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) by Juan Morano ([PDC](/source/Christian_Democratic_Party)) and [Gabriel Boric](/source/Gabriel_Boric) ([Ind.](/source/Independent_(politician))) as part of the 60th electoral district, which includes the entire [Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region](/source/Magallanes_y_la_Ant%C3%A1rtica_Chilena_Region). The commune is represented in the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Chile) by Carlos Bianchi Chelech (Ind.) and Carolina Goic ([PDC](/source/Christian_Democratic_Party)) as part of the 19th senatorial constituency (Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region).
