Samuel Slade was born on 11 April 1771. He was the son of Richard Slade, who was rector at [Westwell, Oxfordshire](/source/Westwell%2C_Oxfordshire) from 1746 until his death,<ref name="welch299">Welch. Queen's Scholars.p.299.</ref> so Samuel may have been born in Westwell.

==Education==
Slade was educated at [St Peter's College, Westminster](/source/Westminster_School) and elected to [Christ Church, Oxford](/source/Christ_Church%2C_Oxford) University in 1789, where he received his Doctorate of Divinity in 1796.<ref>Welch. ''Queen's Scholars''.; p. 418.</ref>

==Career==
He became tutor to the [Duke of Dorset](/source/Charles_Sackville-Germain%2C_5th_Duke_of_Dorset), and in 1813 was first Chaplain to [Lord Whitworth](/source/Charles_Whitworth%2C_1st_Earl_Whitworth), then [Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland](/source/Lord-Lieutenant_of_Ireland).<ref name="welch468">Welch. Queen's Scholars.p.468.</ref> He was instituted Vicar of [Staverton, Northamptonshire](/source/Staverton%2C_Northamptonshire) on  11 April 1815 and Rector of [Hartfield](/source/Hartfield), Sussex in 1817.<ref name="welch468"/> On the 12 March 1824 he was granted the dignity [dean of the Cathedral Church of Chichester](/source/Dean_of_Chichester), after the previous incumbent had been promoted to the bishopric of Gloucester.<ref>The Times.  Monday, Mar 15, 1824; p. 2.</ref> Samual Slade died on 29 December 1829, although it had been expected that he would have gone further in his career, if he had lived longer.<ref>Yates.
