# Samuel Nevill

**Samuel Tarratt Nevill** (13 May 1837 – 29 October 1921),[1] was the first [Anglican](/source/Anglican) [Bishop](/source/Bishop) [of Dunedin](/source/Anglican_Diocese_of_Dunedin), before becoming [Primate of New Zealand](/source/Primate_of_New_Zealand).[2]

## Life

A [scion](/source/Nevill_baronets#Nevill_baronets,_of_Grove_(1675)) of the [ancient Nevilles](/source/House_of_Neville), he was educated at [Nottingham High School](/source/Nottingham_High_School), before attending [St Aidan's College, Birkenhead](/source/St_Aidan's_College,_Birkenhead), and briefly [Trinity College, Dublin](/source/Trinity_College,_Dublin). He was [ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1860 and then went up to [Magdalene College, Cambridge](/source/Magdalene_College,_Cambridge),[3] where he graduated B.A. (second-class Natural Science Tripos) in 1865, proceeding [M.A.](/source/Master_of_Arts_(Oxford,_Cambridge,_and_Dublin)) in 1868, and received D.D. in 1871.[4]

[Ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1860 as [Curate](/source/Curate) of [St Mark's, Scarisbrick](/source/St_Mark's_Church,_Scarisbrick),[5] he then became [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of [Shelton](/source/Shelton,_Staffordshire),[6] an industrial parish in Staffordshire where he was [incumbent](/source/Incumbent_(ecclesiastical)) until being elevated to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate). Whilst there, Nevill also held a [certificate](/source/Lecturer) of the [Science and Art Department](/source/Science_and_Art_Department), [South Kensington](/source/South_Kensington), qualifying him to instruct candidates for examination in the [Education Department](/source/Ministry_of_Education_(United_Kingdom)), and was thus instrumental in laying the foundation of the career of some who have attained positions of eminence.[4]

In 1871 Nevill accepted the [bishopric](/source/Bishopric) of [Dunedin](/source/Dunedin) and was [consecrated](/source/Ordination_of_a_bishop) in the [pro-cathedral](/source/Pro-cathedral) by [Bishop Harper](/source/Henry_Harper_(bishop)), Primate of New Zealand and Bishops [Suter](/source/Andrew_Suter) of Nelson, [Hadfield](/source/Octavius_Hadfield) of Wellington, and [Williams](/source/William_Williams_(bishop)) of Waiapu.

He served as [Primate of New Zealand](/source/Primate_of_New_Zealand) from 1904 until 1919 (acting [Primate](/source/Primate_(bishop)) since 1902),[7] being twice called to attend the [Lambeth Conference](/source/Lambeth_Conference).[8] With [family money](/source/Old_money) he founded [Selwyn College, Otago](/source/Selwyn_College,_Otago) in 1893.

Dr Nevill died at [Bishopsgrove](/source/Bishopsgrove_(Dunedin)), near [Dunedin](/source/Dunedin), [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand) being buried at [St Barnabas Church, Warrington](/source/St_Barnabas_Church,_Warrington). At his death, he was the [senior bishop](/source/Prelate) in the [Anglican Communion](/source/Anglican_Communion). The Nevill Chapel of [St. Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin](/source/St._Paul's_Cathedral,_Dunedin) is named in his memory; St Paul's has a carving depicting the [Lord Bishop](/source/Lord_Bishop) holding a model of the Cathedral's proposed design[9]

Nevill married first, at Heavitree, Devon, in 1863, Mary Susannah Cook Penny (a relative of the [Viscounts Marchwood](/source/Viscount_Marchwood)), who died in 1905. In 1906, he married second Rosalind Fynes-Clinton (died 1972), daughter of Rev Canon Geoffrey Fynes-Clinton (1847–1934), a distant cousin of the [Dukes of Newcastle](/source/Earl_of_Lincoln#Earls_of_Lincoln,_eighth_creation_(1572)); he had no children by either marriage,[10][11] but acted as the adoptive father of his brother Edmund Berrey Nevill's son, Edmund Robert Nevill (1862-1933), following his brother's untimely death in 1875.[12][13]
