==Life==
Samuel Linley was born when the family were living in [Bath, Somerset](/source/Bath%2C_Somerset), during 1760;{{sfnp|Waterfield|1988|p=87|ps=none}} he was baptised on 23 June that year.{{sfnp|Black|1911|p=10|ps=none}} His first public performance was dancing the [hornpipe](/source/hornpipe) for a production of ''[King John](/source/King_John_(play))'' in Bristol when he was six years old.{{sfnp|Waterfield|1988|p=87|ps=none}} He sang in his father's concerts during 1774 and 1775, and played the [oboe](/source/oboe), an instrument he was probably taught to play by [William Herschel](/source/William_Herschel).{{sfnp|Waterfield|1988|p=87|ps=none}} In 1778 he became a [midshipman](/source/midshipman) on [HMS ''Thunderer''](/source/HMS_Thunderer_(1760)), aboard which he contracted the fever from which he died.{{r|Dulwich}} The register of his burial is dated 6 December 1778.{{sfnp|Black|1911|p=147|ps=none}}

[Emma Hart](/source/Emma%2C_Lady_Hamilton), who went on to be Lady Hamilton, was employed by the Linley family as a maidservant;{{r|ODNB}} she nursed Linley during his illness but was distraught when he died, immediately leaving the house.{{sfnp|Waterfield|1988|p=87|ps=none}} [Henry Angelo](/source/Henry_Angelo), one of the [pallbearer](/source/pallbearer)s, recalled in his memoirs that she said "no entreaties could prevail upon her to remain, not even a day."{{sfnp|Angelo|1830|pp=240–241|ps=none}}
