[Rear-Admiral](/source/Rear_Admiral_(Royal_Navy)) **Samuel Hood Inglefield** [CB](/source/Order_of_the_Bath) (1783 – 24 February 1848) was a [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) officer who went on to be [Commander in-Chief, East Indies and China Station](/source/East_Indies_and_China_Station).

## Naval career

The son of [John Nicholson Inglefield](/source/John_Nicholson_Inglefield), Inglefield joined the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) in 1791.[2] He was promoted to post-captain in 1807[3] and commanded [HMS *Bacchante*](/source/French_corvette_Bacchante_(1795)) at [Jamaica](/source/Jamaica) in 1807 and assisted in the capture of the Spanish privateer *Amor de la Patria*,[4] and intercepted a [Spanish](/source/Spain) armed vessel.[5] The following year he captured the French brig *Griffon*.[5]

By 1827 Inglefield was commanding [HMS *Ganges*](/source/HMS_Ganges_(1821)).[6] Promoted to rear admiral in 1841,[2] he was appointed Commander-in-Chief on the [Brazils and River Plate Station](/source/South_East_Coast_of_America_Station)[7] at a time when [Uruguayan Civil War](/source/Uruguayan_Civil_War) was underway.[8] Inglefield took decisive action at this time to keep the [Paraná River](/source/Paran%C3%A1_River) open so ensuring continuity of trade.[9] He became [Commander in-Chief, East Indies and China Station](/source/East_Indies_and_China_Station) in 1846[10] and died of apparent [heat stroke](/source/Heat_stroke) while still serving in that role in 1848.[1][11]

He lived at [Orpington](/source/Orpington) in [Kent](/source/Kent).[12]

## Family

In 1816 he married Priscilla Margaret Otway.[2] He was father to [Edward Augustus Inglefield](/source/Edward_Augustus_Inglefield), an admiral, inventor and Arctic explorer.[13]
