'''Samuel Gerrard''' (1767 – 24 March 1857 ) was a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) [fur trader](/source/fur_trader), businessman, militia officer, justice of the peace, politician, and [seigneur](/source/Seigneurial_system_of_New_France). He was the second president of the [Bank of Montreal](/source/Bank_of_Montreal), from 1838 to 1841. He was a member of the [Special Council of Lower Canada](/source/Special_Council_of_Lower_Canada). In 1841, he acquired the seigneuries of Lanaudière and Carufel.<ref>Peter Deslauriers, “GERRARD, SAMUEL,” in Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 8, University of Toronto/Université Laval, 2003–, accessed February 5, 2024, http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/gerrard_samuel_8E.html.

Gerrard was born in [Ireland](/source/Ireland) at [Gibbstown](/source/Baile_Ghib) House, [County Meath](/source/County_Meath). The Gerrards were a prosperous [Anglo-Irish](/source/Anglo-Irish) family who had held Gibbstown, an estate of some 1,270 [acre](/source/acre)s, since the mid 17th century, and previous to that were seated at nearby Clongill Castle.<ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=NJ1j2FhGpAEC&pg=PA210 North Leinster: The Counties of Longford, Louth, Meath and Westmeath]</ref><ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=iI0jwZZ-7TEC&pg=PA483 Topographical Dictionary of Ireland]</ref><ref>{{Cite web |url=http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/estate-show.jsp?id=1225 |title=Galway Landed Estates Database |access-date=2013-01-07 |archive-date=2016-03-04 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304215441/http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/estate-show.jsp?id=1225 |url-status=dead }}</ref>

Samuel was probably a grandson of the Samuel Gerrard of Gibbstown who was a friend of [Jonathan Swift](/source/Jonathan_Swift) and visited [London](/source/London) and [Bath](/source/Bath%2C_Somerset) in 1740.<ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=udRlsDhfhoUC&pg=PA137 The Alexander Pope Encyclopedia]</ref> Samuel was probably a younger brother of the John Gerrard (d.1838) who was [High Sheriff of Meath](/source/High_Sheriff_of_Meath) in 1818.

By 1785, at the age of eighteen, Samuel Gerrard was established at [Montreal](/source/Montreal) as a merchant concerned with the [fur trade](/source/North_American_fur_trade) from [Timiskaming](/source/Timiskaming_District). In 1791, he went into partnership with his future brother-in-law, [William Grant](/source/William_Grant_(fur_trader)), and Étienne-Charles Campion. Gerrard acted as the firm's accountant, receiving a quarter of the profits.<ref>{{Canadabio|ID=3931}}</ref>
