# Samuel Firewu

**Samuel Firewu Fiche** (born 3 May 2004) is an Ethiopian [track and field](/source/Track_and_field) athlete. He finished second at the [2022 World Athletics U20 Championships](/source/2022_World_Athletics_U20_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men's_3000_metres_steeplechase) and won the 2022 Ethiopian Athletics Championships in the [3000m steeplechase](/source/3000m_steeplechase).[1]

## Biography

In 2021 Samuel Firewu finished fourth in the [Men's 3000 metres steeplechase](/source/2021_World_Athletics_U20_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men's_3000_metres_steeplechase) at the [2021 World Athletics U20 Championships](/source/2021_World_Athletics_U20_Championships) in [Nairobi](/source/Nairobi).[2]

In March 2022 he became Ethiopia senior champion for the first time winning the 3000m steeplechase in [Addis Ababa](/source/Addis_Ababa).[3] He finished fifth at the [2022 African Championships in Athletics](/source/2022_African_Championships_in_Athletics_%E2%80%93_Men's_3000_metres_steeplechase) in June 2022 in [Port Louis](/source/Port_Louis), [Mauritius](/source/Mauritius).[4] In August 2022, he finished as runner-up to compatriot [Samuel Duguna](/source/Samuel_Duguna) to win the silver medal in the [3000 metres steeplechase](/source/2022_World_Athletics_U20_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men's_3000_metres_steeplechase) at the [2022 World Athletics U20 Championships](/source/2022_World_Athletics_U20_Championships) in [Cali](/source/Cali), Colombia.[5]

Samuel Firewu set a new personal best time of 8:10.57 at the [Diamond League](/source/Diamond_League) event in Monaco, in July 2023.[6] He was selected for the Ethiopia team for the [2023 World Athletics Championships](/source/2023_World_Athletics_Championships) in [Budapest](/source/Budapest).[7] In September 2023, he finished second at the Diamond League event in [Xiamen](/source/Xiamen), China, in the 3000m steeplechase.[8] Later that month, he finished second at the Diamond League final in [Eugene, Oregon](/source/Eugene,_Oregon) in a time of 8:10.74.[9]

In March 2024, he won gold in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the [African Games](/source/Athletics_at_the_2023_African_Games).[10] In May 2024, he won the 3000 metres steeplechase at the [2024 Doha Diamond League](/source/2024_Doha_Diamond_League) event with a new personal best time of 8:07.25.[11] He finished fourth in the 3000m steeplechase on 19 May 2024 at the [2024 Meeting International Mohammed VI d'Athlétisme](/source/2024_Meeting_International_Mohammed_VI_d'Athl%C3%A9tisme),[12] and second at the [2024 BAUHAUS-galan](/source/2024_BAUHAUS-galan) Diamond League event in Stockholm.[13] He competed at the [2024 Summer Olympics](/source/Athletics_at_the_2024_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_3000_metres_steeplechase) in [Paris](/source/Paris) in the 3000 metres steeplechase, finishing in sixth place in the final.[14]

In January 2025, he finished third at the [Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza](/source/Cross_Internacional_Juan_Muguerza) in [Elgoibar](/source/Elgoibar).[15] He set a meeting record time of 8:05.61 to win the 3000 metres steeplechase at the [2025 Xiamen Diamond League](/source/2025_Xiamen_Diamond_League) event in China, in April 2025.[16] The following week, he finished sixth at the [2025 Shanghai Diamond League](/source/2025_Shanghai_Diamond_League) event in China on 3 May 2025.[17] He finished fourth at the [2025 Meeting International Mohammed VI d'Athlétisme de Rabat](/source/2025_Meeting_International_Mohammed_VI_d'Athl%C3%A9tisme_de_Rabat), part of the [2025 Diamond League](/source/2025_Diamond_League), in May 2025 in the 3000 metres steeplechase and sixth in Monaco at the [2025 Herculis](/source/2025_Herculis).[18][19] He finished fourth in the [World Championship final](/source/2025_World_Athletics_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men's_3000_metres_steeplechase) on 15 September 2025 in [Tokyo](/source/Tokyo), Japan.[20]

In May 2026, he won the bronze medal in the 3000 metres steeplechase at the [2026 African Championships](/source/2026_African_Championships_in_Athletics) in [Accra](/source/Accra), Ghana, finishing behind compatriot [Gemechu Godana](/source/Gemechu_Godana) and Morocco’s [Salaheddine Ben Yazide](/source/Salaheddine_Ben_Yazide).[21]
