Calvert was a corporal in the [19th Alberta Dragoons](/source/19th_Alberta_Dragoons), a cavalry regiment of the [Non-Permanent Active Militia](/source/Non-Permanent_Active_Militia).<ref name="mayorfight"/>

Calvert ran for a seat in the legislature in the [1935 Alberta general election](/source/1935_Alberta_general_election) as a Social Credit candidate in the electoral district of [Victoria](/source/Victoria_(Alberta_provincial_electoral_district)).
