In [Sweden](/source/Sweden), a '''sameby''' (literally "Sámi village") is a legal entity for [reindeer herding](/source/reindeer_herding), rights for which belongs to [Sámi people](/source/S%C3%A1mi_people), hence the name. They are regulated by the  Swedish {{ill|Reindeer Herding Act|sv|Rennäringslagen}}, according to which a ''sameby'' cannot carry out any other economic activities.<ref name=lagen>[https://lagen.nu/1971:437#P6 Rennäringslag (1971:437)]</ref>

This type of entity, called '''''lappby''''' (literally "Lapp village") at the time, was introduced by the 1886 Reindeer Herding Act.
