**Sambre-et-Meuse** (French: [\[sɑ̃bʁ e møz\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French)) was a [department](/source/Departments_of_France) of the [French First Republic](/source/French_First_Republic) and [French First Empire](/source/French_First_Empire) in present-day [Belgium](/source/Belgium). It was named after the rivers [Sambre](/source/Sambre) and [Meuse](/source/Meuse). It was created on 1 October 1795, when the [Austrian Netherlands](/source/Austrian_Netherlands) and the [Prince-Bishopric of Liège](/source/Prince-Bishopric_of_Li%C3%A8ge) were officially annexed by the French Republic.[2] Prior to this annexation, the territory included in the department had lain in the [County of Namur](/source/County_of_Namur), the [Prince-Bishopric of Liège](/source/Prince-Bishopric_of_Li%C3%A8ge) and the Duchies of [Brabant](/source/Duchy_of_Brabant) and [Luxembourg](/source/Luxembourg).

The [Chef-lieu](/source/Prefectures_in_France) of the department was [Namur](/source/Namur). The department was subdivided into the following four [arrondissements](/source/Arrondissement) and [cantons](/source/Canton_(administrative_division)):

Its territory is now divided between the Belgian provinces of [Namur](/source/Namur_(province)) and [Luxembourg](/source/Luxembourg_(province_of_Belgium)).
