"**Samanyolu**" (literally "[Milky Way](/source/Milky_Way)") is a Turkish melody which was a hit in 1968. "Samanyolu" was the theme music of a 1967 film with the same title.The film is based on [Kerime Nadir](/source/Kerime_Nadir)'s 1940 novel of the same name. It stars [Hülya Koçyiğit](/source/H%C3%BClya_Ko%C3%A7yi%C4%9Fit) as Zülal and [Ediz Hun](/source/Ediz_Hun) as Nejat. The opus has been brought to the silver screen and the television numerous times, first being in 1959, a black white film version starring [Belgin Doruk](/source/Belgin_Doruk) as Zülal, [Göksel Arsoy](/source/G%C3%B6ksel_Arsoy) as Nejat. In 1989, a [mini series version](https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samanyolu_(dizi)) starring [Aydan Şener](/source/Aydan_%C5%9Eener) as Zülal, [Tolga Savacı](https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolga_Savac%C4%B1) as Nejat was produced and between 2009-2010, a TV series version starring [Vildan Atasever](/source/Vildan_Atasever) as Zülal, [Özcan Deniz](/source/%C3%96zcan_Deniz) as Nejat.[1][2][3]

The melody became very popular and the composer Metin Bükey decided to release its record after adding lyrics. He collaborated with Teoman Alpay for the lyrics. It was sung by [Berkant Akgürgen](/source/Berkant_Akg%C3%BCrgen) (aka Berkant). The song became very famous in Turkey and earned Berkant a [gold record](/source/Music_recording_sales_certification).[4]

The next year Dutch singer [David Alexandre Winter](/source/David_Alexandre_Winter) covered the same song with the title "[Oh Lady Mary](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Oh_Lady_Mary&action=edit&redlink=1)" and with French lyrics. It was also covered by [Dalida](/source/Dalida) and [Paul Mauriat](/source/Paul_Mauriat). This song was covered also by Italian singer [Enrico Musiani](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Enrico_Musiani&action=edit&redlink=1) as *Lady Mary* in [Italian](/source/Italian_language).
