# Sama River

**Sama River** is a [river](/source/River) on the [Pacific](/source/Pacific_Ocean) slope, located on the southern coast of [Peru](/source/Peru), in the [department of Tacna](/source/Department_of_Tacna). It is born in the Cotanvilque lagoon located in the Andean peaks south of the [western mountain range](/source/Cordillera_Occidental_(Peru)) of the [Peruvian Andes](/source/Andes) in the [province of Tarata](/source/Tarata_Province), between the Contanvilque and Cauchina hills,[1] and runs from east to west crossing the [coastal desert of Peru](/source/Chala) to its mouth in the *[Mar de Grau](/source/Mar_de_Grau)*, located in the [province of Tacna](/source/Tacna_Province).

## History

It receives its name from the confluence of the Salado and Tala rivers,[2] and in its upper basin is the Jarumas reservoir.

Historically, from 1883 to 1929, the Sama River was temporarily set as the [political boundary](/source/Chile%E2%80%93Peru_border) between [Peru](/source/Peru) and [Chile](/source/Chile) after the [War of the Pacific](/source/War_of_the_Pacific) with the [Treaty of Ancón](/source/Treaty_of_Anc%C3%B3n).[3]

## Basin

The Sama River has a length of 164 [km](/source/Kilometre) from its source and its basin has an area of 4,738 [km2](/source/Square_kilometre),[1] covering the provinces of [Tarata](/source/Tarata_Province) and [Tacna](/source/Tacna_Province) in the [department of Tacna](/source/Department_of_Tacna). The Sama River basin is bordered to the north by the Locumba River basin, to the east by the Maure River basin, to the south by the Caplina River basin and to the west by the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean).[1]
