He played in [Minor League Baseball](/source/Minor_League_Baseball) (MiLB) from {{by|1963}} to {{by|1972}}. In 1994, he was shot and killed by a 15-year-old boy following an auto accident.

One of his daughters is actress [Lana Parrilla](/source/Lana_Parrilla), the star of the [ABC](/source/American_Broadcasting_Company) fairy tale drama series ''[Once Upon a Time](/source/Once_Upon_a_Time_(TV_series))''.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.latina.com/entertainment/tv/exclusive-once-upon-time-star-lana-parrilla-reveals-her-favorite-fairy-tale-charact|title=EXCLUSIVE: 'Once Upon A Time' Star Lana Parrilla Reveals Her Favorite Fairy Tale Characters|website=LATINA}}</ref>

==Early life and amateur career==
Parrilla was born in Puerto Rico and moved to [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn) when he was three years old. He played baseball and [football](/source/high_school_football) at [John Jay High School](/source/Manual_Training_High_School). As a senior baseball player, he had a [batting average](/source/batting_average_(baseball)) of .450. He failed to attract the attention of scouts at tryout camps and, after graduating from high school, returned to Puerto Rico where he encountered former [New York Yankees](/source/New_York_Yankees) pitcher [Luis Arroyo](/source/Luis_Arroyo). After Parrilla took [batting practice](/source/batting_practice) from Arroyo, Arroyo contacted scouts for several teams. He was ultimately signed by the [Cleveland Indians](/source/Cleveland_Indians).<ref>{{cite news |last1=Riddle |first1=Walt |title=Parrilla Has Bat, Speed; Fielding Sam's Problem |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-daily-times-news-parilla/149296736/ |access-date=14 June 2024 |work=[The Daily Times-News](/source/Times-News_(Burlington%2C_North_Carolina)) |date=13 May 1964 |page=4-B}}</ref>

==Minor league career==
He spent ten seasons in the minor leagues, until 1972, hitting .282 with 104 home runs, 165 doubles and 36 triples in 1,039 games.

Perhaps his best season was 1969, when he hit .383 with 28 home runs and 85 RBI (all career highs) in 95 games for the [Raleigh-Durham Phillies](/source/Raleigh-Durham_Phillies). That was the first of three consecutive seasons in which he would hit .330 or better.

He played in the Indians, [New York Yankees](/source/New_York_Yankees), Phillies and [Baltimore Orioles](/source/Baltimore_Orioles) systems.

==Major league career==
Parrilla was signed by the [Philadelphia Phillies](/source/Philadelphia_Phillies) before the 1969 season.

He made his major league debut on April 11, 1970 and played his final big league game on May 11 of that year. In 11 games, he collected two hits in 16 at-bats for a .125 batting average. On May 3, he collected his first hit against [San Francisco Giants](/source/San_Francisco_Giants) pitcher [Mike McCormick](/source/Mike_McCormick_(pitcher))<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN197005031.shtml|title=Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants Box Score, May 3, 1970|website=Baseball-Reference.com}}</ref> and on May 8, he collected his second hit - a double - off of [Los Angeles Dodgers](/source/Los_Angeles_Dodgers) pitcher [Claude Osteen](/source/Claude_Osteen).

He was traded along with [Grant Jackson](/source/Grant_Jackson_(baseball)) and [Jim Hutto](/source/Jim_Hutto) from the Phillies to the Orioles for [Roger Freed](/source/Roger_Freed) on December 15, 1970.<ref>[https://www.nytimes.com/1970/12/17/archives/orioles-obtain-jackson-in-trade-with-phillies-baltimore-adds-mound.html Durso, Joseph.
