# Sam Hornby

**Samuel Connor Hornby** (born 2 February 1995) is an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [goalkeeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football)) for club [Walsall](/source/Walsall_F.C.).

Hornby spent his youth with [Hednesford Town](/source/Hednesford_Town_F.C.) and [Redditch United](/source/Redditch_United_F.C.) before turning professional at [Burton Albion](/source/Burton_Albion_F.C.) in June 2015. He spent the 2015–16 and 2016–17 seasons on [loan](/source/Loan_(sports)) at [Brackley Town](/source/Brackley_Town_F.C.) and [Kidderminster Harriers](/source/Kidderminster_Harriers_F.C.) respectively before he was [transferred](/source/Transfer_(association_football)) to [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) in June 2017. He was loaned out to [Chester](/source/Chester_F.C.) in December 2017 and left the club permanently to sign for Bradford City in May 2019. He was loaned out to [AFC Fylde](/source/AFC_Fylde) in October 2019 and [Colchester United](/source/Colchester_United_F.C.) in January 2022 before joining Colchester permanently six months later. From Colchester, he was loaned to [Solihull Moors](/source/Solihull_Moors_F.C.) in November 2023. He joined Walsall in July 2024.

## Career

### Burton Albion

Hornby played for the youth teams at [Hednesford Town](/source/Hednesford_Town_F.C.) and [Redditch United](/source/Redditch_United_F.C.) before turning professional after signing a one-year [contract](/source/Association_football_contracts) with [Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink](/source/Jimmy_Floyd_Hasselbaink)'s [Burton Albion](/source/Burton_Albion_F.C.) in June 2015. He joined [National League North](/source/National_League_North) side [Brackley Town](/source/Brackley_Town_F.C.) on an initial one-month [loan](/source/Loan_(sports)) in October 2015, and went on to remain an ever-present for the rest of the [2015–16](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_National_League) season as the "Saints" successfully avoided [relegation](/source/Promotion_and_relegation). Brackley [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) [Kevin Wilkin](/source/Kevin_Wilkin) named him as his Player of the Season, and Hornby also picked up the club's Player's Player of the Season award.[4]

He returned on loan to the National League North in June 2016 with newly relegated club [Kidderminster Harriers](/source/Kidderminster_Harriers_F.C.).[5] Harriers ended the [2016–17](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_National_League) season in second place, and lost out to [Chorley](/source/Chorley_F.C.) in the play-off semi-finals; manager [John Eustace](/source/John_Eustace) praised Hornby's performance in the play-offs.

### Port Vale

Hornby signed a two-year contract with [EFL League Two](/source/EFL_League_Two) club [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) in June 2017.[6] He faced competition for the first-team spot from [Rob Lainton](/source/Rob_Lainton), [Ryan Boot](/source/Ryan_Boot), and Joe Slinn. He made his debut for the "Valiants" in the first round of the [EFL Cup](/source/EFL_Cup) on 9 August, coming on for Lainton – who had suffered a serious thigh injury – at [half-time](/source/Half-time) during a 4–1 defeat to [Leeds United](/source/Leeds_United_F.C.) at [Elland Road](/source/Elland_Road).[7] He made his debut in the [English Football League](/source/English_Football_League) three days later, in a 3–2 loss to [Wycombe Wanderers](/source/Wycombe_Wanderers_F.C.) at [Vale Park](/source/Vale_Park), and with Hornby conceding six goals within the space of 135 minutes, manager [Michael Brown](/source/Michael_Brown_(footballer,_born_1977)) said that he was considering signing a new goalkeeper as Hornby was thrown "in the deep end" despite being "a young boy" with "a good future."[8] Hornby picked up an injury in October and was ruled out of action for six weeks.[9] On 7 December, he joined [National League](/source/National_League_(division)) club [Chester](/source/Chester_F.C.) on an initial one-month loan.[10] "Blues" manager [Marcus Bignot](/source/Marcus_Bignot) signed Hornby to provide competition for [Alex Lynch](/source/Alex_Lynch), following the departure of back-up goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan.[11] Having established himself in the "Seals" first-team, the loan deal was initially extended by a further month, and then until the end of the [2017–18](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season.[12][13] However, he was recalled by Port Vale manager [Neil Aspin](/source/Neil_Aspin) on 26 February after Lainton picked up an injury.[14] He got his chance to stake a first-team place under Aspin after Boot picked up an injury at the start of April.[15] He played well in the end of season run-in to help the club to avoid relegation, leading Aspin to say that "now he has proved a point and now he puts himself in a really good position to compete for the number one jersey next season."[16]

Despite playing well in pre-season [friendlies](/source/Exhibition_game), he began the [2018–19](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season as back-up to experienced new signing [Scott Brown](/source/Scott_Brown_(footballer,_born_April_1985)), and was limited to appearances in the group stages of the [EFL Trophy](/source/EFL_Trophy).[17] Brown went on to be named as the club's [Player of the Year](/source/Port_Vale_F.C._Player_of_the_Year) whilst Hornby was restricted to [reserve team](/source/Reserve_team) matches despite impressing in those games.[18]

### Bradford City

In May 2019, after rejecting a new contract offer from Port Vale, Hornby signed a two-year contract with fellow League Two club [Bradford City](/source/Bradford_City_A.F.C.).[19][20] He made his debut for the "Bantams" in the EFL Cup on 13 August, in a 4–0 defeat to [Preston North End](/source/Preston_North_End_F.C.) at [Valley Parade](/source/Valley_Parade).[21] He made his second appearance in the EFL Trophy on 3 September, helping Bradford to beat [Bolton Wanderers](/source/Bolton_Wanderers_F.C.) 4–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw.[22] He moved on loan to [AFC Fylde](/source/AFC_Fylde) on 7 October after manager [Gary Bowyer](/source/Gary_Bowyer) wanted Hornby to play regular football rather than sit on the bench as cover for [Richard O'Donnell](/source/Richard_O'Donnell_(footballer)).[23] [Dave Challinor](/source/Dave_Challinor) stated that he brought Hornby to the "Coasters" after goalkeepers [James Montgomery](/source/James_Montgomery_(footballer,_born_1994)) and Dan Lavercombe suffered a loss of confidence following Fylde's record of 29 goals conceded in the opening 15 games of the National League season.[24]

Hornby played 21 games in the [2020–21](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_Bradford_City_A.F.C._season) season, which proved a difficult campaign for the club and one which he described as "a real mixed bag and a test of character" after he replaced an injured [Richard O'Donnell](/source/Richard_O'Donnell_(footballer)) in the starting eleven.[25] Joint-managers [Mark Trueman](/source/Mark_Trueman) and [Conor Sellars](/source/Conor_Sellars) signed [Will Huffer](/source/Will_Huffer) from [Bradford (Park Avenue)](/source/Bradford_(Park_Avenue)_A.F.C.) in January to provide back-up for Hornby rather than attempting to bring in an experienced goalkeeper to replace him in the starting line-up.[26] On 12 May 2021, he was one of four players offered a new contract by Bradford City.[27] Manager [Derek Adams](/source/Derek_Adams) signed [Alex Bass](/source/Alex_Bass) on loan from [Portsmouth](/source/Portsmouth_F.C.) in January 2023, which was enough to convince Hornby that it was time to leave the club.[28]

### Colchester United

Having featured nine times for Bradford during the first half of the campaign, he joined League Two rivals [Colchester United](/source/Colchester_United_F.C.) on loan until the end of the [2021–22](/source/2021%E2%80%9322_Colchester_United_F.C._season) season on 31 January 2022; "U's" manager [Wayne Brown](/source/Wayne_Brown_(footballer,_born_August_1977)) required goalkeeper cover following suspension to [Shamal George](/source/Shamal_George), injury concerns with [Dean Gerken](/source/Dean_Gerken) and the inexperience of Ted Collins.[29] He made a good impression at the [Colchester Community Stadium](/source/Colchester_Community_Stadium), being named in the League Two Team of the Week for the final of his eight appearances, leading to speculation that he would be a summer [transfer](/source/Transfer_(association_football)) target.[30][31]

His loan spell was made into a permanent one on 28 June after an undisclosed fee was agreed; he signed a two-year contract with Colchester.[32] He said that he was looking forward to battling with George for a first-team place in the [2022–23](/source/2022%E2%80%9323_Colchester_United_F.C._season) campaign.[33] However, he picked up an injury. He underwent surgery to repair a [SLAP tear](/source/SLAP_tear) (Superior Labrum from Anterior to Posterior tear) and a partial [tear](/source/Strain_(injury)) of his [rotation cuff](/source/Rotator_cuff) in his [shoulder](/source/Shoulder), which saw him miss the second half of the campaign.[34] Manager [Matt Bloomfield](/source/Matt_Bloomfield) signed [Tom Smith](/source/Tom_Smith_(footballer,_born_2002)) on loan from [Arsenal](/source/Arsenal_F.C.) as cover in the January [transfer window](/source/Transfer_window).[35]

On 15 November 2023, Hornby joined National League club [Solihull Moors](/source/Solihull_Moors_F.C.) on loan until January 2024, after Moors had loanee Tommy Simkin recalled to his parent club.[36] However, he was recalled early from his loan by Colchester manager [Matthew Etherington](/source/Matthew_Etherington) on 14 December after having kept one clean sheet in four games for Solihull.[37][38] He remained as [Owen Goodman](/source/Owen_Goodman)'s understudy until he was returned to the Colchester [first XI](/source/First_XI) by new manager [Danny Cowley](/source/Danny_Cowley) at the end of the [2023–24](/source/2023%E2%80%9324_Colchester_United_F.C._season) season.[39] United narrowly avoided relegation and Horby said he would love to be kept on at the club.[40] However, he was one of four players released by the club upon the expiry of his contract.[41]

In June 2024, Horby began training with [Chesterfield](/source/Chesterfield_F.C.) at their pre-season training camp in Spain.[42] He had trials with [Southend United](/source/Southend_United_F.C.) and [Walsall](/source/Walsall_F.C.) the following month.[43][44]

### Walsall

On 24 July 2024, Hornby joined Walsall on a permanent one-year deal having impressed on his trial period; he had previously spent time with the club's academy before his departure aged 14.[45] Manager [Mat Sadler](/source/Mat_Sadler) said that "It's one we've been really careful about who we put alongside [Tommy (Simkin)](/source/Tommy_Simkin) and Sam is the perfect one".[46] Simkin started in the league at the start of the [2024–25](/source/2024%E2%80%9325_Walsall_F.C._season) season, though Hornby saved three [penalties](/source/Penalty_kick) in two EFL Trophy games.[47] He started in the league when Simkin was away on international duty.[48] He was named Walsall's PFA Community Champion for the [2024–25](/source/2024%E2%80%9325_Walsall_F.C._season) season.[49] He was an unused substitute in the [2025 League Two play-off final](/source/2025_EFL_League_Two_play-off_final) at [Wembley Stadium](/source/Wembley_Stadium), where Walsall were beaten 1–0 by [AFC Wimbledon](/source/AFC_Wimbledon).[50]

He signed a new two-year contract in June 2025.[51] He battled [Watford](/source/Watford_F.C.) loanee [Myles Roberts](/source/Myles_Roberts) for a first-team spot in the [2025–26](/source/2025%E2%80%9326_Walsall_F.C._season) campaign.[52] Speaking in October, he emphasised the importance of squad players, such as himself, as the club battled for the League Two title.[53]
