# Sam Hayden

**Sam Hayden** (born 1968) is an English [composer](/source/Composer) of [classical](/source/Classical_music) and [electronic](/source/Electronic_music) music and an [academic](/source/Academic_staff). His music has won several prestigious prizes and been performed widely at international music festivals.[1]

## Biography

Hayden was born in [Portsmouth](/source/Portsmouth) and grew up in [Balham](/source/Balham), South London. He played the [trumpet](/source/Trumpet), before turning to writing music at the age of nineteen, having found in the activity of composition "the perfect synthesis of the musical, the creative and the intellectual".[2]

He went on to study with [Martin Butler](/source/Martin_Butler_(composer)), [Michael Finnissy](/source/Michael_Finnissy) and [Jonathan Harvey](/source/Jonathan_Harvey_(composer)) at the [University of Sussex](/source/University_of_Sussex), Joseph Dubiel and [David Rakowski](/source/David_Rakowski) at [Columbia University](/source/Columbia_University), and [Louis Andriessen](/source/Louis_Andriessen) at the [Royal Conservatory of The Hague](/source/Royal_Conservatory_of_The_Hague). He returned to the University of Sussex to complete his [DPhil](/source/DPhil) in 1998.[1]

## Music

Hayden's music is written in an [atonal](/source/Atonal), rhythmically complex style, often utilising [microtones](/source/Microtones).[3] He has described his work as "coming from the traditions of '[post-minimalism](/source/Post-minimalism)' and '[new-complexity](/source/New_Complexity).'"[4]

Hayden's music is primarily scored for acoustic instruments, but he has also worked extensively with the computer programming environment [Max/MSP](/source/Max/MSP), notably collaborating with the violinist Mieko Kanno on music for [e-violin](/source/Electric_violin) and computer. He has also used the [OpenMusic](/source/OpenMusic) software (designed at [IRCAM](/source/IRCAM)) to create computer-generated music.[5]

Together with fellow composers [Paul Whitty](/source/Paul_Whitty) and [Paul Newland](/source/Paul_Newland) he founded the amplified new music ensemble [rout] in 1995,[6] who went on to appear at the [Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival](/source/Huddersfield_Contemporary_Music_Festival), the [ICA](/source/Institute_of_Contemporary_Arts), [Modern Art Oxford](/source/Modern_Art_Oxford) and the Brighton Festival. Their performances have been broadcast on [BBC Radio 3](/source/BBC_Radio_3) and [ResonanceFM](/source/ResonanceFM).[7]

Hayden's works include *Collateral Damage* (1999), which was performed in 2003 by [Ensemble InterContemporain](/source/Ensemble_InterContemporain) in the [Centre Georges Pompidou](/source/Centre_Georges_Pompidou), *Substratum* (2006, revised 2008), a [BBC Proms](/source/BBC_Proms) commission for the [BBC Symphony Orchestra](/source/BBC_Symphony_Orchestra),[4] and *misguided* (2011) for the [ELISION Ensemble](/source/ELISION_Ensemble). His most recent work is a string quartet, *Transience* (2013–14), commissioned by [BBC Radio 3](/source/BBC_Radio_3) and Quatuor Diotima for performance at the [Spitalfields Winter Festival](/source/Spitalfields_Festival), 2014.[8]

## Lecturing and Research

Since 1999, Hayden has held lecturing and research posts at the universities of [Leeds](/source/Leeds_University), [London](/source/University_of_London), [Durham](/source/University_of_Durham) and [Sussex](/source/Sussex_University). In 2013 he was appointed the Reader in Music (Composition) at [Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance](/source/Trinity_Laban_Conservatoire_of_Music_and_Dance).

## Awards

Hayden has been the recipient of many prizes and awards including first prize in the 1995 Benjamin Britten International Competition (*mv* for orchestra, 1991/92) and the composition prize of the 4th Gaudeamus International Young Composers' Meeting 1998.[13]

He was awarded a summer 2000 residency at the Civitella Ranieri Center in Umbria, and a Fulbright Chester Schirmer Fellowship for Music Composition enabling him to work with [Brian Ferneyhough](/source/Brian_Ferneyhough) and [Chris Chafe](/source/Chris_Chafe) at [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University) in the autumn of 2001. He was also granted a 3-year Fellowship by the Arts and Humanities Research Board.[5]

*Sunk Losses* for orchestra, composed during a residency at the [Akademie Schloss Solitude](/source/Akademie_Schloss_Solitude) Stuttgart in 2002, won first prize in the second Christoph Delz Foundation Composers' Competition and received its first performance by the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra during the festival Musik im 21. Jahrhundert, in Saarbrücken in May 2003.[13]
