When not serving on the bench, he has practiced with the [Minneapolis](/source/Minneapolis) law firm of Briggs & Morgan.

Hanson earned an undergraduate degree in [economics](/source/economics) and [istory](/source/istory) from [St. Olaf College](/source/St._Olaf_College) in 1961. He received a [Juris Doctor](/source/Juris_Doctor) from [William Mitchell College of Law](/source/William_Mitchell_College_of_Law) in 1965.

After law school, Hanson clerked for future Chief Justice [Douglas Amdahl](/source/Douglas_Amdahl) and Justice [Robert Sheran](/source/Robert_Sheran) before joining Briggs & Morgan, where he specialized in civil litigation and utility regulation.
