# Sam Currie

**Samuel Percy Currie** (22 November 1889 – 7 December 1962) was a Scottish professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who made over 230 appearances in the [Football League](/source/Football_League) for [Leicester City](/source/Leicester_City_F.C.) as a [full-back](/source/Defender_(association_football)).[1] He [captained](/source/Captain_(association_football)) the club.[4]

## Career

Born in [Kilwinning](/source/Kilwinning), Scotland, Currie began his career with his hometown [junior](/source/Scottish_Junior_Football_Association) club [Kilwinning Rangers](/source/Kilwinning_Rangers_F.C.),[5] with whom he 1908–09 [Scottish Junior Cup](/source/Scottish_Junior_Cup).[6] He moved to England to join [Football League Second Division](/source/Football_League_Second_Division) club [Leicester Fosse](/source/Leicester_City_F.C.) in May 1909.[5] Between 1909 and 1922, he made 248 senior appearances, in addition to a further 123 non-competitive appearances during the [First World War](/source/Association_football_during_World_War_I).[7] Currie ended his career in the [Third Division North](/source/Football_League_Third_Division_North) with [Wigan Borough](/source/Wigan_Borough_F.C.), for whom he made 33 appearances before being appointed [player-coach](/source/Player-coach) of the [reserve team](/source/Reserve_team) in March 1924.[5]

## Personal life

Currie's brothers [Bob](/source/Bob_Currie_(footballer)) and [Duncan](/source/Duncan_Currie) also became footballers.[8]
