**Samuel Matthew Curran**[2] (born 3 June 1998) is an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket) who has played for [England](/source/England_cricket_team) in all formats.[3][4] In domestic cricket, he represents [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club), and has played in multiple [T20](/source/Twenty20) leagues.[5]

Curran made his [Test](/source/Test_cricket) and [One Day International](/source/One_Day_International) debuts in 2018, and his [Twenty20 International](/source/Twenty20_International) debut in 2019.[5] He was part of the [England team](/source/2022_ICC_Men's_T20_World_Cup_squads#England) that won the [2022 T20 World Cup](/source/2022_ICC_Men's_T20_World_Cup), taking the most wickets for England at the tournament and was named Player of the Tournament.[6] He plays as a left-handed [all-rounder](/source/All-rounder), bowling [medium fast](/source/Fast_bowling).[5] He holds the English record for the best T20I bowling figures, 5–10 against [Afghanistan](/source/Afghanistan_national_cricket_team) in 2022. In the [2023 Cricket World Cup](/source/2023_Cricket_World_Cup), Curran became the first English bowler to take a wicket off the first ball on World Cup debut.[7]

## Early life and education

Sam Curran was born on 3 June 1998 in [Northampton](/source/Northampton), England, as the third son of the former [Zimbabwe](/source/Zimbabwe_national_cricket_team) international cricketer [Kevin Curran](/source/Kevin_Curran_(cricketer)) and his wife Sarah (while his father played county cricket for [Northamptonshire](/source/Northamptonshire_County_Cricket_Club)).

He is the youngest brother of a Surrey and England cricketer [Tom Curran](/source/Tom_Curran_(cricketer)), and [Zimbabwe](/source/Zimbabwe) batsman [Ben Curran](/source/Ben_Curran).

He grew up in Zimbabwe and was educated at [Springvale House, Marondera](/source/Springvale_House) and [St. George's College, Harare](/source/St._George's_College,_Harare).[8]

He spent his early years on the family farm in [Rusape](/source/Rusape) before the family left the farm during a period of [land reform](/source/Land_reform_in_Zimbabwe) in Zimbabwe.[9][10] In 2012, he moved to England and was educated at [Wellington College, Berkshire](/source/Wellington_College,_Berkshire).

## Domestic and T20 career

Curran represented Surrey at Under-15, Under-17, and [Second XI](/source/Second_XI_Championship) level. During the 2014 season he represented Weybridge in the [Surrey Championship](/source/Surrey_Championship) Premier Division.[11] He was described by Surrey director of cricket [Alec Stewart](/source/Alec_Stewart) as "the best 17-year-old cricketer that I have seen".[12]

Curran made his senior debut in a [Twenty20](/source/Twenty20) match in the [NatWest t20 Blast](/source/NatWest_t20_Blast) tournament against [Kent](/source/Kent_County_Cricket_Club) at [The Oval](/source/The_Oval) on 19 June 2015, aged 17 years and 16 days.[13] He made his [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) debut in a [County Championship](/source/County_Championship) fixture against Kent at The Oval on 13 July 2015.[14] At the age of 17 years and 40 days he became Surrey's second youngest first-class cricketer in history after [Tony Lock](/source/Tony_Lock), who debuted exactly 69 years earlier at the age of 17 years and 8 days, also against Kent at The Oval. He returned figures of 5/101 in the first innings, and is believed to be the youngest-ever player to take five wickets in a County Championship match.[15] He made his [List A](/source/List_A_cricket) debut in a [Royal London One-Day Cup](/source/Royal_London_One-Day_Cup) match against Northamptonshire at The Oval on Thursday 27 July 2015.

He was signed by [Auckland Aces](/source/Auckland_cricket_team) for the [2017–18 Super Smash](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_Burger_King_Super_Smash).[16] In December 2018, he was bought by the [Kings XI Punjab](/source/Kings_XI_Punjab) in the [player auction](/source/List_of_2019_Indian_Premier_League_personnel_changes) for the [2019 Indian Premier League](/source/2019_Indian_Premier_League) for ₹7.2.[17][18] In March 2019, he was named as one of eight players to watch by the [International Cricket Council](/source/International_Cricket_Council) (ICC) ahead of the 2019 Indian Premier League tournament.[19] In the [2019 Indian Premier League](/source/2019_Indian_Premier_League), he scored quickfire 20 runs as opener and took a hat-trick in his second match, against [Delhi Capitals](/source/Delhi_Capitals) which helped Kings XI Punjab to win by 14 runs, earning him the player of the match award.[20] He also scored a quick fifty of just 23 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2019 Indian Premier League.[21][22][23] He was released by the Kings XI Punjab ahead of the [2020 IPL auction](/source/List_of_2020_Indian_Premier_League_personnel_changes).[24] In the [2020 IPL auction](/source/List_of_2020_Indian_Premier_League_personnel_changes), he was bought by the [Chennai Super Kings](/source/Chennai_Super_Kings) ahead of the [2020 Indian Premier League](/source/2020_Indian_Premier_League).[25]

He reached his hundred off just 62 balls.[28]

In 2026, Sam opened up on the groin injury that ruled him out of IPL 2026, admitting that the issue has been building up for a while before finally forcing a "tough desicion" to withdraw.

## IPL 2026

In November 2025, ahead of [IPL 2026](/source/IPL_2026), Curran joined [Rajasthan Royals](/source/Rajasthan_Royals) after he and [Ravindra Jadeja](/source/Ravindra_Jadeja) were traded to them from [Chennai Super Kings](/source/Chennai_Super_Kings) in exchange for [Sanju Samson](/source/Sanju_Samson).[29] However, Curran had to withdraw from the tournament on 22 March 2026 because of a groin injury. The Royals signed [Dasun Shanaka](/source/Dasun_Shanaka) as his replacement.[30]
