# Sam Byers

**Sam Byers** (born 1979) is a British novelist.[1] He was born in [Bury St Edmunds](/source/Bury_St_Edmunds) and now lives in [Norwich](/source/Norwich), where he studied at the [University of East Anglia](/source/University_of_East_Anglia) (MA Creative Writing, 2004; PhD, 2014).[2]

Byers' [debut novel](/source/Debut_novel) *Idiopathy*, a satire based on the spread of a BSE-like disease,[3] received a [Betty Trask Award](/source/Betty_Trask_Award) and the [Waterstones 11](/source/Waterstones_11) prize. *Idiopathy* was also shortlisted for the [2013 Costa Book Awards](/source/2013_Costa_Book_Awards) First Novel award, and longlisted for the 2014 [Desmond Elliott Prize](/source/Desmond_Elliott_Prize).

In 2018 Byers published his second novel, *Perfidious Albion*, "a new media satire that switches into a hi-tech dystopia centred on class politics."[4]

In 2021 he published his third novel, *Come Join Our Disease*.[5]
