With its deepest depth of {{convert|482|m}}, it is Norway's and [Europe](/source/Europe)'s [second-deepest lake](/source/Lakes_in_Norway), after [Hornindalsvatnet](/source/Hornindalsvatnet). Alternate sources give the depth as either {{convert|464|m}} (old manual method) or {{convert|482|m}} (modern echo sounding method) at the deepest point. The lake sits close to the [Norwegian Sea](/source/Norwegian_Sea), about {{convert|9|m}} above sea level at the surface and reaches to a depth of {{convert|473|m}} below sea level. It is a large lake with an area of {{convert|44.96|km2}}, a volume of {{convert|6.97|km3}}, and a shoreline that is {{convert|105.61|km}} around.<ref name="snl">{{Cite web |last=Store norske leksikon |author-link=Store norske leksikon |title=Salsvatnet |url=http://snl.no/Salsvatnet |access-date=2011-09-22 |language=no}}</ref>

Salvatnet is a [meromictic lake](/source/meromictic_lake), meaning that the water is permanently stratified, often without [oxygen](/source/oxygen) in the lower depths ([bottom water](/source/bottom_water)) due to [density gradient](/source/density_gradient) and a lack of turnover. A meromictic lake often preserves records of the geologic past. The lower layer of the lake is highly [saline](/source/Saline_water) and as a result denser than the higher levels of water. Other meromictic lakes in Norway; with old seawater in the lower depths include [Botnvatnet](/source/Botnvatnet_(Saltdal)), [Kilevann](/source/Kilevann), [Rossfjordvatnet](/source/Rossfjordvatnet), [Rørholtfjorden](/source/R%C3%B8rholtfjorden) an arm of the lake [Tokke](/source/Tokke_(lake)), [Rørhopvatnet](/source/R%C3%B8rhopvatnet), [Tronstadvann](/source/Tronstadvann), and [Øvervatnet](/source/%C3%98vervatnet_(Fauske)).
