Tribe in ancient India

This article is about the historical tribe. For the kingdom in Indian epic literature, see [Salwa kingdom](/source/Salwa_kingdom).

The **Salva** or **Salvi** tribe is mentioned in [Late Vedic](/source/Vedic_period) texts (such as the [Jaiminiya](/source/Jaiminiya) [Brahmana](/source/Brahmana)) is a tribe that invaded [Kurukshetra](/source/Kurukshetra) and defeated the [Kuru kingdom](/source/Kuru_kingdom),[1] probably c. 900 BCE.[2] The prior history of the Salva tribe is obscure, although they appear to have been associated with the [Trigarta kingdom](/source/Trigarta_kingdom) and the [Punjab](/source/Punjab) region.[3] After invading the Kuru kingdom, the Salvas settled along the [Yamuna](/source/Yamuna) river[4] and the [Alwar](/source/Alwar) region of [Rajasthan](/source/Rajasthan) (near the [Matsya kingdom](/source/Matsya_kingdom)),[5] and by the end of the Vedic period they had eventually adopted Vedic culture as they coalesced with the remaining Kurus and the [Surasena](/source/Surasena) [mahajanapada](/source/Mahajanapada).[6] A passage in the [Karna Parva](/source/Karna_Parva) of the [Mahabharata](/source/Mahabharata) praises the Salvas for following the "eternal law of righteousness" but also says that they "need full instruction," unlike the more perceptive Kurus and [Panchalas](/source/Panchala) who can "gather the sense from half-expressed words".[7]
