The land is unusual for the presence of saline springs.[2] It was listed on the [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places) in 2001.[1]

The ranch includes the [Colorado Salt Works](/source/Colorado_Salt_Works), which is separately listed on the National Register, and is crossed by [U.S. Highway 285](/source/U.S._Highway_285) and by the 1879 railroad grade of the [Denver South Park & Pacific](/source/Denver_South_Park_%26_Pacific).[3]

The listed area includes 17 [contributing buildings](/source/Contributing_buildings), two [contributing structures](/source/Contributing_structures), and a [contributing site](/source/Contributing_site), on 128 acres (0.52 km2).[1]

The main ranch house was built in 1872; it has elements of [Second Empire](/source/Second_Empire_architecture) style.[3]

A number of homestead [log cabins](/source/Log_cabins), some moved from elsewhere to serve as quarters for ranch hands, survive on the property.[3]

The property has senior water rights used for hay meadows. In the same family for 140 years, it has been designated a [Colorado Centennial Ranch](/source/Colorado_Centennial_Ranch) by the [Colorado Historical Society](/source/Colorado_Historical_Society).[2]
