# Sally Goold

**Sally Sophia Goold** (née **Bamblett**) was a [Wiradjuri](/source/Wiradjuri) woman who became the first Aboriginal nurse in [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales), [Australia](/source/Australia). Goold was awarded the [Medal of the Order of Australia](/source/Medal_of_the_Order_of_Australia) on 1986 and named the [Senior Australian of the Year](/source/Senior_Australian_of_the_Year) in 2006.

## Early life and education

Goold was born in [Narrandera](/source/Narrandera), New South Wales. After moving to [Sydney](/source/Sydney) as a child, she went to [St Peters Public School](/source/St_Peters_Public_School).[1] When Goold was 14, she dropped out of school to work in retail. At 16 years old, she began her nursing training at [Royal Prince Alfred Hospital](/source/Royal_Prince_Alfred_Hospital) and became the hospital's first Aboriginal nursing student.[2] Later after finishing her training, Goold extended her studies by earning a [nurse education](/source/Nurse_education) diploma and went to [Queensland University of Technology](/source/Queensland_University_of_Technology) for a [Bachelor of Applied Science](/source/Bachelor_of_Applied_Science). Her highest education was a Master's degree in nursing at [Flinders University](/source/Flinders_University)[3]

## Career

Upon completion of her training, Goold started her career working for the [King George V Memorial Hospital](/source/King_George_V_Memorial_Hospital) and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital while becoming the first [registered nurse](/source/Registered_nurse) working in New South Wales.[1] In 1971, Goold was a co-founder of the [Aboriginal Medical Service](/source/Aboriginal_Medical_Service). Following establishment, Goold moved to teach at the Queensland University of Technology's nursing school. While teaching, she led Aboriginal health services for [Queensland Health](/source/Queensland_Health).[4] After teaching for six years at the university, she influenced the creation of the [Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses](/source/Congress_of_Aboriginal_and_Torres_Strait_Islander_Nurses) in 1997 and named the congress's executive director. Other hospitals Goold taught at include the [St Andrews War Memorial Hospital](/source/St_Andrews_War_Memorial_Hospital) and [Prince Charles Hospital](/source/Prince_Charles_Hospital).[3] In 2007, Goold became part of the inaugural [National Indigenous Council](/source/National_Indigenous_Council) for the [Australian Government](/source/Australian_Government).[5]

## Awards and honours

In 1986, Goold was presented the [Medal of the Order of Australia](/source/Medal_of_the_Order_of_Australia) at the [1986 Queen's Birthday Honours](/source/1986_Queen's_Birthday_Honours_(Australia)).[6] In 2006, Goold was named the [Senior Australian of the Year](/source/Senior_Australian_of_the_Year).[4]
