# Sal Mosca

**Salvatore Joseph Mosca**[1] (April 27, 1927[1] – July 28, 2007)[2] was an American jazz pianist who was a student of [Lennie Tristano](/source/Lennie_Tristano).[1]

Mosca was born in [Mount Vernon, New York](/source/Mount_Vernon%2C_New_York), United States,[1] to [Italian American](/source/Italian_Americans) parents.[3] He worked in [cool jazz](/source/Cool_jazz) and [post-bop](/source/Post-bop). After playing in the [United States Army Band](/source/United_States_Army_Band) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he studied at the [New York College of Music](/source/New_York_College_of_Music) using funds provided by the [G.I. Bill](/source/G.I._Bill).[4] He began working with [Lee Konitz](/source/Lee_Konitz) in 1949, and also worked with [Warne Marsh](/source/Warne_Marsh).[1] He spent much of his career teaching and was relatively inactive after 1992, but new CDs were released in 2004, 2005, and 2008.

He died from [emphysema](/source/Emphysema) in [White Plains, New York](/source/White_Plains%2C_New_York), at the age of 80.[2]
