**Sairang** is a [town](/source/Census_town) in the [Aizawl district](/source/Aizawl_district) of the [Indian](/source/India) [state](/source/States_and_territories_of_India) of [Mizoram](/source/Mizoram). Due to its proximity to [Aizawl](/source/Aizawl) city, it acts as a satellite town of the city.

## History

After the British invasion of 1871-1872, [Bengali](/source/Bengalis) traders set up the first marketplace in Mizoram in Changsil.[1]

Sairang is the nearest town with river from [Aizawl](/source/Aizawl) which is about 14 kilometers. The journey of about 140 Kilometers from Sairang to [Silchar](/source/Silchar) via [Tlawng](/source/Tlawng) river used to take about 15–30 days during the 1890s, depending upon the season and water level on a flat water boat.[2]

## Geography

Sairang is located at [23°48′N 92°40′E / 23.8°N 92.67°E / 23.8; 92.67](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Sairang&params=23.8_N_92.67_E_).[3]

## Connectivity

Sairang lies on the route of [Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project](/source/Kaladan_Multi-Modal_Transit_Transport_Project). It is connected with roads from major towns in [Assam](/source/Assam), through [NH 54](/source/NH_54). The nearest railway station is at [Bairabi](/source/Bairabi), which is connected to the railway network with a broad gauge track. A new broad gauge line from [Bairabi to Sairang](/source/Bairabi_Sairang_Railway) is under construction.[4] Due to several delays in construction work, and due to [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic)-related lockdowns and lack of labour, the revised deadline of the rail line to Sairang, and the final extension till Mizoram's capital [Aizawl](/source/Aizawl), is likely to be completed by March 2023.[5]

Survey for the Rail line from Sairang to [Hmawngbuchhuah](/source/Hmawngbuchhuah) on the border near Zorinpui was completed in August 2017 and it will be constructed in the future phase.[6]

100 kilometres (62 mi) route from the Indo-Myanmar border at Zorinpui to Aizawl is upgraded to two lanes in both directions (total 4 lanes). From Aizal it connect to Aizawal-Saiha National Highway at [Lawngtlai](/source/Lawngtlai) in [Mizoram](/source/Mizoram) in India by road on [National Highway 54 (India)](/source/National_Highway_54_(India)) (NH-54), which then continues further to [Dabaka](/source/Dabaka) in [Assam](/source/Assam) via 850 km long NH-54 which in turn is part of the larger [East-West Corridor](/source/North%E2%80%93South_and_East%E2%80%93West_Corridor#East-West_Corridor) connecting [North East India](/source/North_East_India) with the rest of [India](/source/India).[7] Almost complete (June 2017).[8] Tender has been awarded, upgrade to this national highway is under construction and to be completed by 2019.[9]

## Demographics

As of the [2011 Census of India](/source/2011_Census_of_India), Sairang had a population of 5,950.[10]
