'''Sailor''' (foaled 1952 in [Kentucky](/source/Kentucky)) was an American [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) [racehorse](/source/horse_racing). Bred and raced by heiress [Isabel Dodge Sloane's](/source/Isabel_Dodge_Sloane) [Brookmeade Stable](/source/Brookmeade_Stable), he was out of the Brookmeade mare Flota and sired by [U.S. Racing Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) inductee [Eight Thirty](/source/Eight_Thirty).

Sailor was conditioned for racing by Hall of Fame trainer [Preston Burch](/source/Preston_M._Burch). As a three-year-old in 1955, the colt did not run in any of the [U.S. Triple Crown](/source/Triple_Crown_of_Thoroughbred_Racing) races. However, under regular rider [Hedley Woodhouse](/source/Hedley_Woodhouse) he won four major races that year, including the prestigious [Pimlico Special](/source/Pimlico_Special) at [Pimlico Race Course](/source/Pimlico_Race_Course) in [Baltimore](/source/Baltimore%2C_Maryland). At age four, he began the year competing in [Florida](/source/Florida), where he won the [Gulfstream Park Handicap](/source/Gulfstream_Park_Handicap), then back at Pimlico Race Course he captured the [John B. Campbell Handicap](/source/John_B._Campbell_Handicap), at the time a race of national importance.

==As a sire==
Retired to [stud](/source/stud_(animal)) duty at [Darby Dan Farm](/source/Darby_Dan_Farm) in [Lexington, Kentucky](/source/Lexington%2C_Kentucky), Sailor sired a number of stakes winners, notably the outstanding Hall of Fame filly [Bowl of Flowers](/source/Bowl_of_Flowers), [Travers Stakes](/source/Travers_Stakes) winner [Crewman](/source/Crewman_(horse)), and 1964 [American Champion Sprint Horse](/source/American_Champion_Sprint_Horse) [Ahoy](/source/Ahoy_(horse)).
