# Saiful Islam Duke

**Saiful Islam Duke** is a retired lieutenant commander of the [Bangladesh Navy](/source/Bangladesh_Navy). He is the nephew of former prime minister [Khaleda Zia](/source/Khaleda_Zia).[1]

## Career

[2][1] Duke and his brother in law, [Directorate General of Forces Intelligence](/source/Directorate_General_of_Forces_Intelligence) officer Lieutenant Colonel [Saiful Islam Joarder](/source/Saiful_Islam_Joarder) were charged with involvement in the [2004 Dhaka grenade attack](/source/2004_Dhaka_grenade_attack) on former prime minister [Sheikh Hasina](/source/Sheikh_Hasina).[3] He is accused of aiding Maulana Tajuddin, main supplier of the grenades used in the attack and member of terrorist groups based in Pakistan, in fleeing Bangladesh.[4] he along with the other accused were indicted on 19 March 2012.[5] Duke was arrested on 27 August 2010 by the [Criminal Investigation Department](/source/Criminal_Investigation_Department_(Bangladesh)).[6] He is currently being tried for his role in the attacks.[7] He had secured bail in the case in 2014.[8]

## Personal life

Duke's father, [Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury](/source/M._Rafiqul_Islam), was a professor of economics and dean at the [University of Rajshahi](/source/University_of_Rajshahi) and the former VC of [Islamic University, Bangladesh](/source/Islamic_University,_Bangladesh). Duke's mother, Selima Islam, is the eldest sister of former prime minister [Khaleda Zia](/source/Khaleda_Zia) and a descendant of Murad Khan, a 16th-century Middle Eastern immigrant.[9]
