'''{{nihongo|Sagara Domain|相良藩|Sagara-han}}''' was a Japanese [feudal domain](/source/Han_(Japan)) under the [Tokugawa shogunate](/source/Tokugawa_shogunate) of [Edo period](/source/Edo_period), located in [Tōtōmi Province](/source/T%C5%8Dt%C5%8Dmi_Province). The domain was centered in what is now the [Sagara district](/source/Sagara%2C_Shizuoka) of [Makinohara city](/source/Makinohara%2C_Shizuoka), [Shizuoka Prefecture](/source/Shizuoka_Prefecture).<ref name="explorer">[http://www.japanese-castle-explorer.com/province.html?name=Totomi "Tōtōmi Province" at JapaneseCastleExplorer.com]; retrieved 2013-6-11.</ref> The site of the [Sagara jin'ya](/source/Sagara_Castle) is now the Sagara Elementary School.

==History==
In 1710, Honda Tadaharu, lord of [Ibo Domain](/source/Ibo_Domain) in [Mikawa Province](/source/Mikawa_Province) was transferred by the Tokugawa shogunate to Sagara, on the coast of Tōtōmi Province and his revenues were raised from 10,000 ''[koku](/source/koku)'' to 15,000 ''koku''. The [Honda clan](/source/Honda_clan) ruled Sagara for three generations, until Honda Tadayuki was transferred to [Izumi Domain](/source/Izumi_Domain) in [Mutsu Province](/source/Mutsu_Province) in 1746.

The Honda were replaced by [Itakura Katsukiyo](/source/Itakura_Katsukiyo), who ruled for only three years before being transferred to [Annaka Domain](/source/Annaka_Domain) in [Kōzuke Province](/source/K%C5%8Dzuke_Province). Sagara was then returned to the Honda clan in the form of Honda Tadanaka, formerly of [Komoro Domain](/source/Komoro_Domain) in Mikawa; however, it was reclassified as only a minor 10,000 ''koku'' domain at this time.

In 1767, Sagara Domain was awarded to [Tanuma Okitsugu](/source/Tanuma_Okitsugu), who rose from very humble status as a [page](/source/page_(servant)) to [Shōgun](/source/Sh%C5%8Dgun) [Tokugawa Ieshige](/source/Tokugawa_Ieshige), to [chamberlain](/source/Chamberlain_(office)), and then grand-chamberlain and ''[rōjū](/source/r%C5%8Dj%C5%AB)'' under Shōgun [Tokugawa Ieharu](/source/Tokugawa_Ieharu). He was also elevated to the status of ''[daimyō](/source/daimy%C5%8D)'' when he was awarded Sagara Domain, and over the years increased its revenues from 10,000 ''koku'' to 57,000 ''koku''. Sagara prospered greatly under his economic reforms, and a road was built linking it to the great [Tōkaidō highway](/source/T%C5%8Dkaid%C5%8D_(road)) connecting [Edo](/source/Edo) with [Kyoto](/source/Kyoto). However, after Tokugawa Ieharu’s death Tanuma Okitsugu soon fell from favor, and reduced in rank and income. His grandson, [Tanuma Okiaki](/source/Tanuma_Okiaki), inherited a domain reduced back to its former 10,000 ''koku'' status in 1787, and less than a year later, was transferred to [Shimomura Domain](/source/Shimomura_Domain) in [Mutsu Province](/source/Mutsu_Province). Sagara Domain became a ''[tenryō](/source/tenry%C5%8D)'' territory ruled directly by the ''Shōgun''.

However, in 1823, his son [Tanuma Ogimasa](/source/Tanuma_Ogimasa) was allowed to return to Sagara, where he and his descendants remained until the [Meiji Restoration](/source/Meiji_Restoration). The domain had a population of 310 samurai at the start of the Meiji period. The domain maintained its primary residence (''kamiyashiki'') in [Edo](/source/Edo) at [Kanda](/source/Kanda%2C_Tokyo), until the [An'ei](/source/An'ei) (1772–81) period, and at Hanjo at the time of the Meiji restoration.<ref>[http://www1.parkcity.ne.jp/sito/84.html Edo daimyo.net] {{in lang|ja}}</ref>

In February 1869, the final ''daimyō'' of Sagara Domain, Tanuma Okitaka, was transferred by the new [Meiji government](/source/Meiji_government) to the short-lived [Kokubo Domain](/source/Kokubo_Domain) in [Kazusa Province](/source/Kazusa_Province) and Sagara Domain was absorbed into the new [Shizuoka Domain](/source/Shizuoka_Domain) created for retired ex-Shōgun [Tokugawa Yoshinobu](/source/Tokugawa_Yoshinobu).
