The **Sacred Congregation of Rites** was a [congregation](/source/Congregation_(Roman_Curia)) of the [Roman Curia](/source/Roman_Curia), erected on 22 January 1588 by [Pope Sixtus V](/source/Pope_Sixtus_V) by *[Immensa Aeterni Dei](/source/Immensa_Aeterni_Dei)*; it was divided into two separate congregations by [Pope Paul VI](/source/Pope_Paul_VI) on 8 May 1969.

The Congregation was charged with the supervision of the [liturgy](/source/Mass_(liturgy)) and the process of [canonization](/source/Canonization) of [saints](/source/Saint).[1]

As part of the reforms following the [Second Vatican Council](/source/Second_Vatican_Council), [Pope Paul VI](/source/Pope_Paul_VI)'s 1969 [apostolic constitution](/source/Apostolic_constitution) *[Sacra Rituum Congregatio](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sacra_Rituum_Congregatio&action=edit&redlink=1) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacra_Rituum_Congregatio)]* divided the congregation into the [Congregation for the Causes of Saints](/source/Congregation_for_the_Causes_of_Saints), and the [Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments](/source/Congregation_for_Divine_Worship_and_the_Discipline_of_the_Sacraments).[1]
