The '''Sackwald''' ({{IPA|de|ˈzakˌvalt}}) is a ridge, up to {{Höhe|374|DE-NN|link=true}} high, in the [Lower Saxon Hills](/source/Lower_Saxon_Hills) in the district of [Hildesheim](/source/Landkreis_Hildesheim) in the North German state of [Lower Saxony](/source/Lower_Saxony). It is named after the village of [Sack](/source/Sack_(Alfeld)) in the borough of [Alfeld](/source/Alfeld_(Leine)), the name meaning "Sack Forest".

The Sackwald is part of the geological structure of the Sack Basin or ''[Sackmulde](/source/Sackmulde)'' along with the [Sieben Berge](/source/Sieben_Berge_(ridge)) and the [Vorberge](/source/Vorberge).

== Geography ==
The Sackwald lies on the eastern edge of the [Leine Uplands](/source/Leine_Uplands) in the [Lower Saxon Hills](/source/Lower_Saxon_Hills). It is located between the town of [Alfeld](/source/Alfeld_(Leine)) on the [River Leine](/source/Leine_(Aller)) to the northwest and the rather more distant town of [Bad Gandersheim](/source/Bad_Gandersheim) to the southeast.

The Sackwald is surrounded by the ridges of the [Vorberge](/source/Vorberge) to the north, the southeastern foothills of the [Hildesheim Forest](/source/Hildesheim_Forest) to the north-northeast, the [Sauberge](/source/Sauberge) to the northeast, the [Harplage](/source/Harplage) to the east-northeast, the [Heber](/source/Heber_(ridge)) to the east, the [Helleberg](/source/Helleberg_(hills)) to the south and southwest, the [Selter](/source/Selter_(ridge)) (on the other side of the Leine valley) to the southwest and the [Sieben Berge](/source/Sieben_Berge_(ridge)) to the northwest.
Topographically it transitions into the last-named ridge seamlessly. Several streams rise within or on the edge of the Sackwald, whose waters eventually empty into the westward-running [Leine](/source/Leine_(Aller)) or the northeast flowing [Innerste](/source/Innerste); the ridge thus lies on the watershed between the two rivers.

The unpopulated Sackwald is crossed by several forest tracks and hiking trails, which enable the densely forested landscape to be explored. They include the [Rennstieg](/source/Rennstieg_(Sackwald)) path that runs through the forests and the Hohe Schanze Historic Educational Path (''Historische Lehrpfad Hohe Schanze''). The ridge may be reached over winding state roads (''[Landesstraße](/source/Landesstra%C3%9Fe)n'') branching off the [B 3](/source/Bundesstra%C3%9Fe_3) and [B 64](/source/Bundesstra%C3%9Fe_64) federal roads, and link, for example, Alfeld, Freden and Lamspringe with one another.

Also worth seeing are the ruins of the [Schulenburg Chapel](/source/Schulenburg_Chapel), which stand northeast of [Langenholzen](/source/Langenholzen) and north of Sack (both in the borough of Alfeld) at about 185 metres above sea level on the southwestern edge of the neighbouring [Vorberge](/source/Vorberge).
