**Sabaa Tahir** is an American[1] [young adult](/source/Young_adult_fiction) novelist best known for her [*New York Times*-bestselling](/source/The_New_York_Times_Best_Seller_list) *[An Ember in the Ashes](/source/An_Ember_in_the_Ashes)*, its sequels, and the novel *[All My Rage](/source/All_My_Rage)*.[2]

Two of her novels, *An Ember in the Ashes* and *A Torch Against the Night,* were listed among *Time* Magazine's 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time in 2020.[3] In 2022, her novel *[All My Rage](/source/All_My_Rage)* won the 2022 [Boston Globe–Horn Book Award](/source/Boston_Globe%E2%80%93Horn_Book_Award), the [National Book Award for Young People's Literature](/source/National_Book_Award_for_Young_People's_Literature)[4] and the [Michael L. Printz Award](/source/Michael_L._Printz_Award).*[5]* In 2025, her novel *Heir* was shortlisted for the inaugural New Adult Book Prize,[6] won the Ignyte Award for Outstanding Novel – Young Adult,[7] and the Libby Award for Young Adult Book of the Year.[8]

Tahir has also published non-fiction reviews and essays in *The New York Times*,[9][10] *The Washington Post*[11] and *Vox*.[12]

## Life

Tahir grew up in the [Mojave Desert](/source/Mojave_Desert) in [Ridgecrest, California](/source/Ridgecrest%2C_California), with her parents and two older brothers.[1] Her parents had emigrated from [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan) to the [United Kingdom](/source/United_Kingdom) before moving their family to the [United States](/source/United_States).[1] She attended [UCLA](/source/University_of_California%2C_Los_Angeles), during which time she interned at *[The Washington Post](/source/The_Washington_Post)*. After graduation, she took a job there as a copy editor.[13] She currently lives in the [San Francisco Bay Area](/source/San_Francisco_Bay_Area).[1]
