**Sa'ad** ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): סעד, [lit.](/source/Literal_translation) 'Aid') is a [religious kibbutz](/source/Religious_Kibbutz_Movement) located in the northwestern [Negev](/source/Negev) desert in southern [Israel](/source/Israel). Located near the [Gaza Strip](/source/Gaza_Strip), and the cities of [Sderot](/source/Sderot) and [Netivot](/source/Netivot), it falls under the jurisdiction of [Sdot Negev Regional Council](/source/Sdot_Negev_Regional_Council). In 2024, it had a population of 1,100.[1]

## History

Historic watchtower

The kibbutz was founded on 30 June 1947, the day after the one-year anniversary of [Operation Agatha](/source/Operation_Agatha), by graduates of the [Bnei Akiva](/source/Bnei_Akiva) movement. It was established in a manner similar to the [tower and stockade](/source/Tower_and_stockade) settlement campaign of the late 1930s, and was the first religious kibbutz to be founded by [Sabras](/source/Sabra_(person)). During the [1948 War](/source/1948_Arab%E2%80%93Israeli_War), the kibbutz was almost entirely destroyed by the Egyptian army. The local museum "Ma'oz Mul 'Aza" (Stronghold at Gaza) details the history of the war in this area, opposite the Gaza strip.[2]

Following the war, the kibbutz members renewed their cultivation of the land, developing over the following fifty years, a multi-generational population that generates its income from [agriculture](/source/Agriculture) and industry.

## Economy

Garden in Sa'ad

Sa'ad is one of Israel's largest producers of [carrots](/source/Carrot), with a quarter of the country's production. Other crops include [potatoes](/source/Potato), [avocados](/source/Avocado), [almonds](/source/Almond) and [citrus](/source/Citrus) fruit. Sa'ad has a large [dairy farm](/source/Dairy_farming) and a [poultry farm](/source/Poultry_farming).

Sa'ad's industries include [Syfan](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Syfan&action=edit&redlink=1), a plant that manufactures plastic [shrink film](/source/Shrink_film) for packaging, and [Popli](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Popli&action=edit&redlink=1), which supplies popcorn products and pet food.[3][4]

The kibbutz also operates Beit Shikma, a convalescent and geriatric home for patients who require full-time care.[5]

The [dairy farm](/source/Dairy_farming) on the kibbutz was the Israeli leader in 2011 for productivity with an average of 13 785 litres per head that year. A [dairy cow](/source/Dairy_cattle) named Kharta, was the world record holder giving 18 208 litres of milk.[6]

## Education

The kibbutz runs and participates in several unique educational frameworks such as Youth Education, a school and dormitory framework for teenagers from broken homes; Foster Family, for grade school children; Conversion Ulpan, for families and young people who are [converting to Judaism](/source/Conversion_to_Judaism); and Nativ[7], the [USY](/source/United_Synagogue_Youth) year program in Israel for American teens.

Sa'ad has a regional religious elementary school for grades 1 through 9 under the auspices of Israel's Ministry of Education. kibbutz Sa'ad, kibbutz [Alumim](/source/Alumim), and moashav [Tkuma](/source/Tkuma%2C_Israel) cooperate in running the [Da'at](/source/Da'at) School for their children. Pupils from towns in the surrounding area also attend.
