**Samjosef Rasmo Belangel** (born June 27, 1999) is a Filipino professional [basketball](/source/Basketball) player for [Daegu KOGAS Pegasus](/source/Daegu_KOGAS_Pegasus) of the [Korean Basketball League](/source/Korean_Basketball_League) (KBL).

## Early life and education

SJ Belangel was born in [Bacolod](/source/Bacolod)[1] on June 27, 1999[2] to Sammy Belangel and Mayette Belangel ([née](/source/Birth_name#Maiden_and_married_names) Rasmo).[3] His father is a former college basketball player.[1]

Belangel studied in the Ateneo education system, first moving to the Ateneo High School in ninth grade.[4] He graduated from the [Ateneo de Manila University](/source/Ateneo_de_Manila_University) with a degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2022.[5]

## High school and college career

Hailing from [Bacolod](/source/Bacolod), SJ Belangel has suited up for the teams of Eliakim Learning School, USLS-Integrated School, St. Joseph's Academy–Iloilo, and Bacolod Tay Tung High School prior to joining [Ateneo High School](/source/Ateneo_High_School).[6][7]

He also took part and won the [Batang Pinoy](/source/Batang_Pinoy) [3x3](/source/3x3_basketball) national competition held in Bacolod in 2014.[7]

He moved to Ateneo High School and played for the [Blue Eaglets](/source/Ateneo_Blue_Eaglets) after he scouted by its coach Joe Silva. He turned down offers to attend [La Salle Green Hills](/source/La_Salle_Green_Hills) and [De La Salle Zobel](/source/De_La_Salle_Santiago_Zobel_School) despite his family having a largely La Sallian background.[4] He ended his stint with the Eaglets in 2018 by helping them clinch the [UAAP Season 80](/source/UAAP_Season_80_basketball_tournaments) junior title and earned a place in the Mythical Five for himself.[3][8]

Belangel would commit to Ateneo, and entered [Ateneo de Manila University](/source/Ateneo_de_Manila_University) for his college studies. He made his [UAAP](/source/UAAP_Basketball_Championship) senior debut for the [Tab Baldwin](/source/Tab_Baldwin)-mentored [Ateneo Blue Eagles](/source/Ateneo_Blue_Eagles) in [Season 81](/source/UAAP_Season_81_basketball_tournaments).[8] He played for three UAAP season featuring in 48 games played, Belangel averaged 7.38 points and 2.08 assists per contest.[5]

## Professional career

### Daegu KOGAS Pegasus (2022–present)

In June 2022, Belangel decided to forego his two years of eligibility left to play for Ateneo.[5] He decided to turn professional and play for the [Daegu KOGAS Pegasus](/source/Daegu_KOGAS_Pegasus) of the [Korean Basketball League](/source/Korean_Basketball_League).[9][10][11]

## National team career

### Junior national team

Belangel has played for the [Philippine national team](/source/Philippines_men's_national_basketball_team). He played for the [national under-16 team](/source/Philippines_men's_national_under-17_basketball_team) in the [2015 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship](/source/2015_FIBA_Asia_Under-16_Championship) as its captain.[7][2]

### Senior national team

For the senior team, he took part in the [2020 FIBA Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade](/source/2020_FIBA_Men's_Olympic_Qualifying_Tournaments_%E2%80%93_Belgrade) and the [2022 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers](/source/2022_FIBA_Asia_Cup_qualification).[2] In the [2022 FIBA Asia Cup](/source/2022_FIBA_Asia_Cup), he was on the team failed to qualify for the quarterfinals.[12]

Belangel has a girlfriend, Isabel Cruz.[13]
