# SEITA

**SEITA** (*Société d'exploitation industrielle des tabacs et des allumettes*), was the former [French](/source/France) state-owned [tobacco](/source/Tobacco) [monopoly](/source/Monopoly). Cigarette brands included [Gauloises](/source/Gauloises) and [Gitanes](/source/Gitanes), both created in 1910. By 1999, it had become a private French company.[1] It merged in 1999 with its [Spanish](/source/Spain) equivalent, [Tabacalera](/source/Tabacalera), to form [Altadis](/source/Altadis) and was subject to a competition merger review by the [European Commission](/source/European_Commission).[1]
