South African National Space Agency Space Science Directorate Alternative names Hermanus Magnetic Observatory (HMO) Location Hermanus, South Africa Coordinates 34°25′27″S 19°13′26″E / 34.42417°S 19.22389°E / -34.42417; 19.22389 Established 1941; 85 years ago (1941) [edit on Wikidata]

**SANSA Space Science**, previously the **Hermanus Magnetic Observatory** (**HMO**) is [South Africa](/source/South_Africa)'s national [geomagnetic](/source/Geomagnetism) research facility. The observatory is situated in the town of [Hermanus](/source/Hermanus) ([Overstrand Local Municipality](/source/Overstrand_Local_Municipality)) in the [Western Cape Province](/source/Western_Cape_Province) and forms part of the [South African National Space Agency](/source/South_African_National_Space_Agency).

The observatory is an active participant in the [International Real-time Magnetic Observatory Network](/source/Intermagnet), one of a large number [magnetic observatories](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Magnetic_observatory&action=edit&redlink=1) which monitor and model variations of the Earth's magnetic field.[1]

The HMO consists of four operational groups:

- [Space Physics](/source/Space_physics)

- [Geomagnetism](/source/Geomagnetism)

- [Technology](/source/Technology)

- [Science Outreach](/source/Science_outreach)

Since 1957 the observatory has been operating [neutron monitors](/source/Neutron_monitor). Currently this is being done on behalf of the [North-West University](/source/North-West_University) and consists of 12 [Chalk River](/source/Chalk_River_Laboratories) neutron counter tubes.[2]
