'''Rychtal''' ({{IPAc-pl|'|r|y|h|t|a|l}}) is a town in [Kępno County](/source/K%C4%99pno_County), [Greater Poland Voivodeship](/source/Greater_Poland_Voivodeship), in west-central Poland.{{TERYT}} It is the seat of the [gmina](/source/gmina) (administrative district) called [Gmina Rychtal](/source/Gmina_Rychtal).

==History==
The area became part of the emerging Polish state in the 10th century, and after the fragmentation of Poland into smaller duchies, it formed part of the [Duchy of Silesia](/source/Duchy_of_Silesia). The Polish settlement at the site called ''Będłowice'' or ''Bandlowice'' is documented in 1222, when the estates were held by the [Teutonic Order](/source/Teutonic_Order). From 1233 onwards, the [Silesian](/source/Duchy_of_Silesia) duke [Henry the Bearded](/source/Henry_the_Bearded) opened the remote area to [German](/source/Germans) and [Walloon](/source/Walloons) colonists in the course of the mediaeval ''[Ostsiedlung](/source/Ostsiedlung)'' migration. Their settlement ''Reichthal'' ("Rich Valley") was first mentioned as a [town](/source/German_town_law) in 1294, then a possession of the [Bishops of Wrocław](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Wroc%C5%82aw). It replaced the older Polish locality, nevertheless, due to the proximity of the episcopal lands to [Greater Poland](/source/Duchy_of_Greater_Poland), the Rychtal area remained bilingual with both [Polish](/source/Polish_language) and [German](/source/German_language) speaking populations and predominantly [Catholic](/source/Catholic_Church).

In the 18th century, the town was annexed by [Prussia](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia). After the [secularization](/source/secularization) of the Bishopric's estates under [Prussian](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia) rule in 1810, Rychtal belonged to the [Namslau](/source/Namys%C5%82%C3%B3w) (Namysłów) district of the [Silesia Province](/source/Silesia_Province). In 1842, the town had a population of 1,310, predominantly [Polish](/source/Polish_people) by ethnicity and Catholic by confession.<ref name=sgk>{{cite book|author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |title=Słownik geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego i innych krajów słowiańskich, Tom XI|year=1890|language=pl|location=Warszawa|page=74}}</ref> During the Polish [January Uprising](/source/January_Uprising) in 1863 weapons were smuggled through the town to the [Russian Partition](/source/Russian_Partition) of Poland.<ref>{{cite journal|last=Pater|first=Mieczysław|year=1963|title=Wrocławskie echa powstania styczniowego|journal=Śląski Kwartalnik Historyczny Sobótka|publisher=[Zakład Narodowy im. After the German defeat in [World War I](/source/World_War_I), the area (''Reichthaler Ländchen'') was allocated to the Greater Polish [Poznań Voivodeship](/source/Pozna%C5%84_Voivodeship_(1921%E2%80%931939)) of the [Second Polish Republic](/source/Second_Polish_Republic) by the 1919 [Treaty of Versailles](/source/Treaty_of_Versailles).<ref>[Part II, Article 27, No. 7.](/source/s%3ATreaty_of_Versailles%2FPart_II)</ref>

Rychtal lost town privileges in 1934. In the course of the German [invasion of Poland](/source/invasion_of_Poland), which started [World War II](/source/World_War_II) in September 1939, it was [occupied by Nazi Germany](/source/Occupation_of_Poland_(1939%E2%80%931945)) as part of the ''[Reichsgau Wartheland](/source/Reichsgau_Wartheland)'', attended with [persecutions of the Polish inhabitants](/source/Nazi_crimes_against_the_Polish_nation). In 1939, the Germans carried out the first [expulsions of Poles](/source/Expulsion_of_Poles_by_Nazi_Germany), and several died during their deportation in freight trains to [Mińsk Mazowiecki](/source/Mi%C5%84sk_Mazowiecki) in the more-eastern part of German-occupied Poland.<ref>{{cite book|last=Wardzyńska|first=Maria|year=2017|title=Wysiedlenia ludności polskiej z okupowanych ziem polskich włączonych do III Rzeszy w latach 1939-1945|language=pl|location=Warszawa|publisher=[IPN](/source/Institute_of_National_Remembrance)|pages=183–184|isbn=978-83-8098-174-4}}</ref> The area was overrun by the [Red Army](/source/Red_Army) in the course of the [Vistula–Oder Offensive](/source/Vistula%E2%80%93Oder_Offensive) in January 1945 and restored to the [Republic of Poland](/source/People's_Republic_of_Poland).
