**Ryan John Giles** (born 26 January 2000) is an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [left-back](/source/Left-back) for [Premier League](/source/Premier_League) club [Hull City](/source/Hull_City_A.F.C.).

## Club career

Giles was born in [Telford](/source/Telford), Shropshire, grew up in [St George's](/source/St_George's%2C_Shropshire)[2] and attended [Wrockwardine Wood School](/source/Telford_Priory_School).[3] He progressed through [Wolverhampton Wanderers](/source/Wolverhampton_Wanderers_F.C.)' youth system, winning the Academy Player of the Year Award for the 2017–18 season.[4]

The midfielder was one of a group of young players taken on a pre-season tour with the first team in summer 2018.[5] He was an unused substitute in several [EFL Cup](/source/EFL_Cup) ties before signing a four-year contract with the club.[6]

On 24 March 2018, he was loaned to his hometown club [AFC Telford United](/source/AFC_Telford_United) in the [National League North](/source/National_League_North) for the rest of the season, being signed by his future Wolves under-23 coach [Rob Edwards](/source/Rob_Edwards_(footballer%2C_born_1982)).[7] He made his debut the same day in a goalless home draw with [Darlington](/source/Darlington_F.C.) as an 82nd-minute substitute for [Jordan Lussey](/source/Jordan_Lussey).[3] He totalled nine appearances and provided seven assists as the Bucks avoided relegation, and he scored in home and away wins against [Spennymoor Town](/source/Spennymoor_Town_F.C.) in April.[2]

He made his Wolves debut on 26 January 2019, his 19th birthday in an FA Cup fourth round tie away at [Shrewsbury Town](/source/Shrewsbury_Town_F.C.). The match ended as a 2–2 draw.[8]

On 1 July 2019, Giles temporarily located back to [Shropshire](/source/Shropshire) once again, signing for [League One](/source/EFL_League_One) side Shrewsbury Town on a planned season-long loan.[9] On his debut on 3 August, he scored the only goal of a home win in the season opener against [Portsmouth](/source/Portsmouth_F.C.).[10] On 17 January 2020, he was recalled by his parent club due to injury to Wolves' [Rúben Vinagre](/source/R%C3%BAben_Vinagre).[11]

Giles returned to League One on January deadline day 2020, joining [Coventry City](/source/Coventry_City_F.C.) on loan for the rest of the 2019–20 season.[12] He made his only appearance on 25 February in a 1–1 home draw with [Rotherham United](/source/Rotherham_United), as a last-minute substitute for [Sam McCallum](/source/Sam_McCallum).[13] The season was curtailed due to the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic_in_the_United_Kingdom), with Coventry promoted as champions.[14]

On 25 January 2021, he was recalled by Wolverhampton,[15] and loaned the next day to [Rotherham United](/source/Rotherham_United_F.C.) until the end of the season.[16] He made his debut for them on 27 January, away at [Middlesbrough](/source/Middlesbrough_F.C.). Coming on in the 88th minute, he scored in stoppage time to complete a 3–0 win.[17]

On 13 July 2021, it was announced that he had signed on loan to [Cardiff City](/source/Cardiff_City_F.C.) on loan for the [2021–22 season](/source/2021%E2%80%9322_Cardiff_City_F.C._season).[18] On 3 January 2022, Giles was recalled by his parent club and left Cardiff. At the time of his recall, Giles had registered nine assists, a tally that could not be bettered in the Championship.[19]

On 31 January 2022, Giles joined [EFL Championship](/source/EFL_Championship) side [Blackburn Rovers](/source/Blackburn_Rovers_F.C.) on loan for the remainder of the 2021–22 season.[20]

On 23 June 2022, Giles joined [Middlesbrough](/source/Middlesbrough_F.C.) on loan for the duration of the [2022–23 season](/source/2022%E2%80%9323_Middlesbrough_F.C._season).[21]

On 28 July 2023, debutant Premier League side [Luton Town](/source/Luton_Town_F.C.) announced the permanent signing of Giles, reuniting him with manager Rob Edwards who gave Giles his senior debut during his loan spell at AFC Telford.[22] The transfer fee was reported to be around £5 million.[23]

On 30 January 2024, Giles joined Championship club [Hull City](/source/Hull_City_A.F.C.) on a six-month loan.[24] He made his debut for the club on 3 February in the home 1–0 win against [Millwall](/source/Millwall_F.C.).[25]

On 27 June 2024, Hull City triggered their option to sign Giles from [Luton Town](/source/Luton_Town_F.C.), following his loan spell with the club in the 2023–24 season. Giles has signed a three-year deal with the club for an undisclosed fee.[26]

On 23 January 2025, Giles joined Michael Carrick's [Middlesbrough](/source/Middlesbrough_F.C.) on loan until the end of the season.[27]
