Britto is originally from [Binghamton, New York](/source/Binghamton%2C_New_York),{{r|schafer}} where her father, Ronald Britto,{{r|vb}} was a professor of [economics](/source/economics) at [Binghamton University](/source/Binghamton_University).{{r|ronbing}} As an undergraduate mathematics student at the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology), she was the 1994 winner of the Elizabeth Lowell Putnam Prize for the best performance by a female student in the [William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition](/source/William_Lowell_Putnam_Mathematical_Competition), and the 1995 winner of the [Alice T. Schafer Prize for Excellence in Mathematics by an Undergraduate Woman](/source/Alice_T._Schafer_Prize), awarded by the [Association for Women in Mathematics](/source/Association_for_Women_in_Mathematics).{{r|schafer}}

She completed her Ph.D. in physics at [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) in 2002.
