==History and description==
It depicts a scene in an English country lane, where a child holds open a [gate](/source/gate) for a passer-by on horseback. It has been suggested that the traveller, with only his shadow visible could be the local [landowner](/source/landowner), with the salute the boy is giving him adding a humorous touch to the scene.<ref>Barringer p.87-88</ref>

One of the better known paintings of Collins, the father of the writer [Wilkie Collins](/source/Wilkie_Collins), it was displayed at the [Royal Academy Exhibition of 1832](/source/Royal_Academy_Exhibition_of_1832) at [Somerset House](/source/Somerset_House) in  [London](/source/London). It was acquired by the [Duke of Devonshire](/source/William_Cavendish%2C_6th_Duke_of_Devonshire) for his [Derbyshire](/source/Derbyshire) [country estate](/source/country_estate) [Chatsworth House](/source/Chatsworth_House).
