***Russian Fairy Tales*** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Народные русские сказки, variously translated; English titles include also ***Russian Folk Tales***) is a collection of nearly 600 [fairy](/source/Fairy_tale) and [folktales](/source/Fable), collected and published by [Alexander Afanasyev](/source/Alexander_Afanasyev) between 1855 and 1863. The collection contained fairy and folk tales from Ukraine and Belarus alongside Russian stories.[1][2] In compiling the work, Afanasyev's editing was informed by the German *[Grimm's Fairy Tales](/source/Grimm's_Fairy_Tales),* Slovak tales collected by [Pavol Dobšinský](/source/Pavol_Dob%C5%A1insk%C3%BD), [Božena Němcová](/source/Bo%C5%BEena_N%C4%9Bmcov%C3%A1)'s work, [Vuk Karadžić](/source/Vuk_Karad%C5%BEi%C4%87)'s Serbian tales, and other Norwegian, French, and Romanian research.[3]

[Vladimir Propp](/source/Vladimir_Propp) drew heavily on this collection for his analyses in his *[Morphology of the Folktale](/source/Morphology_of_the_Folktale)*.[4]
