He spent his youth in [Portland, Oregon](/source/Portland%2C_Oregon), where he started wrestling with the same instructor who taught the legendary wrestler [Robin Reed](/source/Robin_Reed). Before the [Olympics](/source/Olympic_Games), Vis was an [AAU](/source/Amateur_Athletic_Union) national champion.
