'''Russell David Lyons''' (6 September 1957) is an American mathematician, specializing in [probability theory](/source/probability_theory) on graphs, combinatorics, statistical mechanics, [ergodic theory](/source/ergodic_theory) and harmonic analysis.<ref name=IUNews>{{cite web|title=American Mathematical Society's first class of fellows includes six from IU Bloomington|website=IU News, Indiana University|date=9 November 2012|url=http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news-archive/23434.html}}</ref>

== Education and career ==
Lyons graduated with B.A. mathematics in 1979 from [Case Western Reserve University](/source/Case_Western_Reserve_University),<ref name=CV>{{cite web|title=Russell David Lyons, CV|website=Indiana University (iu.edu)|url=http://pages.iu.edu/~rdlyons/pdf/cv-web.pdf}}{{Dead link|date=October 2023 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref> where he became a [Putnam Fellow](/source/Putnam_Fellow) in 1977 and 1978.<ref name="MMA">{{cite web|title=Putnam Competition Individual and Team Winners |url=http://www.maa.org/programs/maa-awards/putnam-competition-individual-and-team-winners |publisher=[Mathematical Association of America](/source/Mathematical_Association_of_America)|access-date=December 13, 2021}}</ref> He received his Ph.D. in 1983 from the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan) with the thesis ''A Characterization of Measures Whose Fourier-Stieltjes Transforms Vanish at Infinity'', which was supervised by [Hugh L. Montgomery](/source/Hugh_L._Montgomery) and [Allen Shields](/source/Allen_Shields).<ref>{{MathGenealogy|id=7100|title=Russell David Lyons}}</ref> Lyons was a postdoc for the academic years 1983–1985 at the [University of Paris-Sud](/source/University_of_Paris-Sud). He was an assistant professor at [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University) from 1985 to 1990 and an associate professor at [Indiana University](/source/Indiana_University) from 1990 to 1994. At [Georgia Tech](/source/Georgia_Institute_of_Technology) he was a full professor from 2000 to 2003. At Indiana University he was a professor of mathematics from 1994 to 2014 and is since 2014 the James H. Rudy Professor of Mathematics; there he has also been an adjunct professor of statistics since 2006.<ref name=CV/>

Lyons has held visiting positions in the United States, France, and Israel.<ref name=CV/> In 2012 he was elected a Fellow of the [American Mathematical Society](/source/American_Mathematical_Society).<ref name=IUNews/> In 2014 he was an invited speaker of the [International Congress of Mathematicians](/source/International_Congress_of_Mathematicians) (ICM) in Seoul.<ref>{{cite book|chapter=Determinantal Probability: Basic Properties and Conjectures|title=Proceedings of the ICM, Seoul 2014|volume=4|pages=137–161}} [https://arxiv.org/abs/1406.2707 arXiv preprint]</ref> In 2017 a conference was held in Tel Aviv in honor of his 60th birthday.<ref>{{cite web|title=Elegance in probability: A conference honoring Russell Lyons' 60th birthday, September 3–7 2017, Tel Aviv|website=Institute of Mathematical Statistics|url=https://imstat.org/meetings-calendar/elegance-in-probability-a-conference-honoring-russell-lyonss-60th-birthday/}}</ref>
