Russell Errett was born in [New York City](/source/New_York_City).  In 1829 he moved to [Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania](/source/Pittsburgh%2C_Pennsylvania), and became engaged in newspaper work.<ref name=congbio>{{CongBio|id=E000207|inline=yes|date=April 13, 2017}}</ref>  Among the papers he edited were the Pittsburgh ''Daily Sun'', a small penny journal; the ''Washington Patriot'', an anti-slavery weekly of [Washington, Pennsylvania](/source/Washington%2C_Pennsylvania); and the ''[Pittsburgh Gazette](/source/Pittsburgh_Gazette)''.<ref>{{cite book |author=Thomas, Clarke M. |title=Front-Page Pittsburgh: Two Hundred Years of the Post-Gazette |publisher=University of Pittsburgh Press |year=2005 |pages=78–79 |isbn=0-8229-4248-8 |url=http://digital.library.pitt.edu/cgi-bin/t/text/text-idx?c=pittpress;cc=pittpress;view=toc;idno=31735062136266 }}</ref> He was elected [comptroller](/source/comptroller) of Pittsburgh in 1860. He served as clerk of the [Pennsylvania State Senate](/source/Pennsylvania_State_Senate) in 1860, 1861, and 1872 to 1876. During the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War), Errett was appointed additional paymaster in the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) in 1861 and served until mustered out in 1866. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1867. Errett was elected as a Republican to the [45th](/source/45th_United_States_Congress), [46th](/source/46th_United_States_Congress), and [47th](/source/47th_United_States_Congress) Congresses. He served as chairman of the [United States House Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings](/source/United_States_House_Committee_on_Expenditures_on_Public_Buildings) during the 47th Congress. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in [1882](/source/United_States_House_election%2C_1882). He was appointed by President [Chester A. Arthur](/source/Chester_A._Arthur) as United States pension agent at Pittsburgh in 1883 and served in this capacity until May 1887. He died in [Carnegie, Pennsylvania](/source/Carnegie%2C_Pennsylvania), in 1891. Interment was in Chartiers Cemetery.<ref name=congbio/>
