He was educated at [Hampton School](/source/Hampton_School) along with Johnny and Greg Searle and then [St Catherine's College, Oxford](/source/St_Catherine's_College%2C_Oxford),<ref>{{cite web|title=Oxonian Olympians|publisher=[University of Oxford](/source/University_of_Oxford)|url=http://www.ox.ac.uk/about_the_university/oxford_people/famous_oxonians/oxonian_olympians/index.html|accessdate=20 August 2012|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120920083635/http://www.ox.ac.uk/about_the_university/oxford_people/famous_oxonians/oxonian_olympians/index.html|archivedate=20 September 2012|df=dmy-all}}</ref> where he stroked the dark blue boat to victory in the 1991 Boat Race. He won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in the four with [Jonny Searle](/source/Jonny_Searle), [Greg Searle](/source/Greg_Searle) and [Tim Foster](/source/Tim_Foster). He was later umpire of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.
He trained as a doctor while rowing, and is now a consultant ear nose and throat surgeon at Guy's Hospital specialising in diseases of the ear and base of the skull.
