He was [called to the Bar](/source/called_to_the_Bar) in 1972 ([Middle Temple](/source/Middle_Temple)) and made a [Bencher](/source/Bencher) in 1995. He became a [Queen's Counsel](/source/Queen's_Counsel) in 1987, practising from 4 New Square Chambers. Jackson was a Recorder from 1990 until 1998, and was appointed a Deputy High Court Judge in 1993.

In 1999, he was appointed a Judge of the [High Court of Justice](/source/High_Court_of_Justice) and assigned to the [Queen's Bench Division](/source/Queen's_Bench_Division) and was [knighted](/source/knight_bachelor) the same year. He later served as the judge in charge of the [Technology and Construction Court](/source/Technology_and_Construction_Court) from 2004 to 2007. == Review of civil costs ==
With the support of the [Ministry of Justice](/source/Ministry_of_Justice), the [Master of the Rolls](/source/Master_of_the_Rolls), [Sir Anthony Clarke](/source/Sir_Anthony_Clarke), asked Lord Justice Jackson to conduct a review of civil litigation [costs](/source/Costs_(English_law)). Aims include carrying out an [independent review](/source/Independent_reviews_in_the_United_Kingdom) of the rules governing the costs of civil litigation and to provide recommendations in order to promote access to justice at proportionate cost.
